This is the shocking list of injuries and assaults suffered by Mitie security staff at Southampton General Hospital: injured and broken ribs, broken noses, a dislocated knee, a broken finger, black eyes, a needle stick to the hand, being strangled and spat at and threats to kill.<\/p>\n

All for \u00c2\u01418.64 an hour.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Regular attacks on security staff at the hospital, employed by outsourcing firm Mitie, are key to a escalating industrial dispute over wages and sick pay \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as well as further evidence of the role of austerity in a nationwide trend of increasing violence towards NHS staff.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite said that Mitie Security is refusing to provide its Southampton staff with adequate personal protection equipment (PPE), such as stab vests and safety restraints, even though knife-related incidents are increasing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite lead officer for health in the south east Scott Kemp said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith cuts to the police force and mental health services, there is a tendency for those suffering from various conditions to be dropped off at the hospital and left to the security guards.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe guards report incidents that have occurred on every shift, but the bosses at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and Mitie Security will only investigate when someone is injured.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The union is currently holding a ballot for strike action or industrial action short of a strike of its members, employed by Mitie Security Ltd, at Southampton General Hospital over pay and conditions that closes on Friday 15 March.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The security staff are seeking \u00c2\u014110.50 for security officers and \u00c2\u014112.16 for supervisors, with additional payments of 50p per hour on night rates; \u00c2\u01411 an hour on Saturday and double time on Sunday.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite said the demand for an increase in pay from the current \u00c2\u01418.64 an hour reflected the stress of the job and that Mitie has a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bgood window of opportunity\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to enter into negotiations before the ballot closes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Kemp explained that sick pay policy also needs to be overhauled.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt present, if the security staff are injured at work, and if the resulting investigation finds in their favour, they get two weeks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 full pay and then two weeks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 half-pay. After that, it is the statutory minimum.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have members getting beaten up and then having to return to work after two weeks, when they are clearly not fit to, as to drop down to half-pay would mean missing mortgage or rent payments and significant financial hardship.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat we want is enhanced sickness payments for those off work due to being injured protecting patients and hospital staff; proper and transparent investigations into all attacks; and our members having the necessary personal protection equipment.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the 12 months to October 2018, more than 15 per cent of health service staff nationwide were attacked by patients, their families or members of the public \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the highest the rate of assaults has been for five years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The increase in violence towards NHS staff has occurred at the same time as police numbers have fallen dramatically because of Tory-imposed austerity \u00e2\u20ac\u201c particularly cuts made during Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time as home secretary.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the Southampton area alone, more than 500 front line police officers have been cut since 2012.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Public services are increasingly reliant on low-pay outsourcing firms such as Mitie, who often run operations on a shoestring, to provide security.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite national officer for health Jackie Williams said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnfortunately what it is happening at Southampton General Hospital to Mitie Security staff is being replayed across the NHS.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFor someone to attack those whose sole purpose is to help others \u00e2\u20ac\u201c whether by keeping them safe, ensuring the premises are clean and running properly or providing treatment \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is disgusting and should be met with zero tolerance.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhile of course the ultimate responsibility lies with the individuals carrying out these crimes, the relationship between the increase in attacks on health service staff and austerity cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSuccessive cuts to services, including policing, mental health services and hospital staffing levels, have created a situation in which over worked and dedicated staff are increasingly being forced to deal with dangerous situations without adequate resources or protections.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
