To mark International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day today (March 8), Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s South East region is ramping up the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Period Dignity campaign<\/a> in the area to highlight the issue of access to sanitary products, which affects women and girls in schools and workplaces everywhere.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite South East women and equalities officer Janet Henney said the region is running two parallel projects to observe International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day this week \u00e2\u20ac\u201c one is a big push to get employers across the region to sign up to Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Period Dignity charter, which commits businesses to providing free sanitary products in their women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and disabled toilets.<\/p>\n

The region has provided campaign materials to all its local branches so that they can put Period Dignity front and centre on their employers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 agenda.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOn International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be shining a spotlight on employers who signed up to our campaign \u00e2\u20ac\u201c such as, for example, Brighton & Hove Buses which has really embraced Period Dignity and has gone the extra mile,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Janet told UniteLive.<\/p>\n

Not only has Brighton & Hove Buses agreed to provide sanitary products in all of its depots, but it is also playing an instrumental role in Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s second project as part of International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day celebrations. Through what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s called the Red Box Project, Brighton & Hove Buses will be providing sheds at two depots to serve as collection points for sanitary product donations for girls in schools.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Red Box Project is a nationwide initiative that works on a local level to collect pads, tampons and other necessities for girls in local schools, many of whom are forced to miss school because they cannot afford sanitary products.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bJust to give you an idea of how successful Red Box has been locally \u00e2\u20ac\u201c at a school in Portsmouth after donations from Red Box, girls\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 attendance rate soared by 30 per cent, which is huge,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Janet explained.<\/p>\n

On International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day, Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s South East region will give the Red Box Project a big push, as local branches and workplaces collect donations and ask their employers to match these donations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Period poverty, which affects one in 10 girls according to the Plan International UK, has become an especially urgent issue as families suffer under years of austerity with no government support. A shocking \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0137,700 children in the UK have missed school because of period poverty.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Whilst we fully recognise the need for government to take on and tackle this issue, we can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t watch from the side-lines as neutral by-standers while this is going on,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Janet said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why Unite South East region has been working closely with local community Red Box Projects \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with local collections and donations direct to the projects. We will make a difference where government fails to act.”<\/p>\n
