{"id":17847,"date":"2019-04-17T16:32:05","date_gmt":"2019-04-17T15:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=17847"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:51","slug":"southampton-hospital-security-strike-to-go-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=17847","title":{"rendered":"Security staff strike to go ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Security staff at Southampton General Hospital, who are being attacked in the A&amp;E department, will go ahead with a second day of strike action on Good Friday (April 19).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said today (April 17) that talks yesterday (April 16) with the employer Mitie Security Ltd made progress, but not sufficient for the strike to be called off.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite lead officer for health in the south east Scott Kemp said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe had talks with Mitie yesterday and some progress was made, but it was not sufficient for our members to suspend their Good Friday strike.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>National media attention has focused on the plight of the 21 security staff, who are being attacked on a regular basis by members of the public either under the influence of drink or drugs, or with mental health problems. There has been a lack of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as stab vests and safety restraints.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe company has increased its offer to \u00c2\u01419.50 an hour,\u00c2\u00a0but our members are seeking \u00c2\u014110.50 for security officers and \u00c2\u014112.16 for supervisors for what is generally acknowledged to be a stressful and, on occasions, dangerous job,&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0Scott Kemp\u00c2\u00a0added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe company made no new offer on unsocial hours payments for weekend working and there was also no increase in sick pay forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHowever, most PPE issues are resolved pending further talks with the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have consulted with our members overnight and while there has been some progress with the company inching towards our position, it was considered that not enough ground had been made to justify calling off the strike on Good Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat said, Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s door remains open for constructive talks 24\/7 over this Easter holiday period.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The security staff voted unanimously for strike action and industrial action short of a strike. A 48-hour stoppage starting on May 3, a 24-hour strike on May\u00c2\u00a024 and a further 72-hour strike on\u00c2\u00a0June 7 are scheduled. All the strikes will start at just after midnight.
