{"id":17863,"date":"2019-04-18T15:10:15","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T14:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=17863"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:50","slug":"good-friday-safety-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=17863","title":{"rendered":"The Good Friday safety strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A security guard at Southampton General has spoken out about attacks on staff at the hospital \u00e2\u20ac\u201c involving scissors, screw drivers and needles \u00e2\u20ac\u201c before a second strike tomorrow (18 April).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking exclusively to UNITElive, the guard said personal protection equipment (PPE) issues around stab vests and safety restraints that have been <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/southampton-hospital-security-strike-to-go-ahead\/\">resolved<\/a> during talks in recent days are not enough to end the dispute and called for pay and benefits that reflect the hazards of the job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Currently guards at the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/southampton\/\">Southampton<\/a> hospital, employed by outsourcing giant <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-admin\/unitelive.org\/tag\/mitie\">Mitie<\/a>, receive just \u00c2\u01418.64 an hour while their sick pay benefits amount to just two weeks full pay and two weeks half pay before moving onto the statutory minimum.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking anonymously, the guard said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have had incidents were weapons have been pulled on security. People have used needles as weapons and we had a recent incident were a patient with <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-admin\/unitelive.org\/tag\/mental-health\">mental health<\/a> issues took a pair of scissors out of a nurse\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pocket.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve seen guards being beaten up and they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had to come back into work before they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re better. Another recent incident involved a guard having his hand mangled while restraining another patient with mental health issues. He took a few days off, but had to come back early because he knows that the injury pay isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t suitable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bYou cannot blame patients with mental health issues for the situation they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in because they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve come to the hospital for help. But unfortunately it comes to the point where the people who are helping need help themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s always going to be the potential of getting hurt at work in security because we are the ones who stand in front to protect staff and patients from attacks. When does that occur the company needs to give the correct sick pay entitlement until we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re ready to go back to work. As soon as you start hitting half payments you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to be missing mortgages and phones bills and stuff like that.
