Tata Motors has denied reports that Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) <\/span>could be sold to <\/span>French carmaker<\/span> PSA<\/span> as Unite called for clarification. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to a Press Association report<\/span>,<\/span> leaked documents <\/span>suggest that<\/span> PSA \u00e2\u20ac\u201c owners of Cit<\/span>roen, Peugeot and Vauxhall-Opel \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0in discussions<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0with Tata over the sale of <\/span>JLR<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Tata spokesman<\/span> contradicted the report<\/span>, saying,<\/span> \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>As a matter of policy, we do not comment on media speculation.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“But we can confirm there is no truth to these rumours.”<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is reported that a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpost-sale integration document\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, detailing the benefit<\/span>s<\/span> of<\/span> such<\/span> a merger,<\/span> is circulating and that PSA and Tata are st<\/span>udying cost saving measures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Responding to the reports, PSA said it <\/span>can \u00e2\u20ac\u015bstand alone\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and is in \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno hurry\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to<\/span> add to its portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n

However a spokesman for the firm added <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bif an opportunity comes, like Opel (<\/span>Vauxhall<\/span><\/a>), we will consider it.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unhelpful<\/i> rumours<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Unite national officer <\/span>for automotive Des Quinn<\/span> said the union has noted \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>Tata\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s denial of these unhelpful rumours<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quinn said, <\/span>“We will be seeking an urgent clarification from both Jaguar Land Rover and PSA.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Our paramount concern is the livelihoods of our members who have worked hard to ensure the success of both Jaguar Land Rover and Vauxhall.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>The industry is undergoing a period of major change driven by environmental and technological developments but to succeed it has to take its workforce with it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Urgent<\/i> action<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said<\/span> urgent action is needed from the government to enable the UK car industry to successfully transition. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>Adding to the uncertainty afflicting the <\/span>automative<\/span><\/a> industry is the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s failure to support infrastructure investment supporting alternative fuel vehicles, to develop UK based electric and hydrogen vehicle technologies or to proactively intervene in the economy to encourage new sales of cleaner vehicles<\/span>.<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite has repeatedly said that the government needs to develop a meaningful coherent <\/span>industrial policy<\/span><\/a> and the difficulties currently being faced by the car industry demonstrate firstly that this has not happened and secondly, why this remains imperative.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n
