{"id":18049,"date":"2019-05-14T17:12:19","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T16:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18049"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:29","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:29","slug":"urgent-talks-call-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18049","title":{"rendered":"Urgent talks call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has called for urgent talks with the Marshall Group, one of Cambridge\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest employers, following the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0 announcement today (May 14) that it plans to move out of the city by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, which has 900 highly skilled engineering members at the Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group, said that it is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098very disappointed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that the union was not involved in the discussions about the move before today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s statement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are calling for urgent talks with Marshall\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s management to explore the full implications of today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s announcement to consider new sites outside Cambridge.\u00c2\u00a0 Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s priority is to ensure our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 future employment security,&#8221; said\u00c2\u00a0Unite regional officer Roger Dillon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEven though the move is not due to 2030, there will be obvious worries for the workforce as to what the future holds and how it will impact on their jobs. We are talking about highly skilled engineering jobs that are part of the lifeblood of the vibrant Cambridge economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is very disappointed that we were not involved in the discussions prior to the announcement. However, we now seek to be fully consulted going forward, with other stakeholders such as the local authorities, over the future of the Marshall Group that is so integral to the health of the regional economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhile we appreciate the need for more housing in the Cambridge area, especially affordable housing, there has to be a balance struck with the need to preserve such key engineering jobs that are essential for the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s economic well-being.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will be canvassing our members in the days and week ahead for their views on this proposed move.
