The Jamie Oliver restaurant group today (May 21) collapsed into administration \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with all but three of the restauranteur\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s outlets now closed, resulting in the loss of more than 1,000 jobs.<\/p>\n

Executives at accountancy firm KPMG were today appointed as administrators, who will now seek buyers for the three remaining establishments at Gatwick Airport, including a Jamie\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Diner. All other outlets outside Gatwick, which include Jamie\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Italian, Barbecoa, and Fifteen, have shut.<\/p>\n

Amid plunging sales which nosedived by 11 per cent last year to \u00c2\u0141101m, the restaurant group sought to find a buyer in recent months. Poor sales led the group to close 12 restaurants and slash 600 jobs. Celebrity chef and restauranteur Jamie Oliver ploughed \u00c2\u014113m of his own money into the restaurant group last year, which saved it from bankruptcy in the 11th hour.<\/p>\n

The Jamie Oliver group\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse comes amid tough trading conditions in casual dining, with many chains closing outlets including \u00c2\u00a0Carluccio\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, Byron Burger and Prezzo. Caf\u0102\u00a9 chain Patisserie Valerie collapsed into administration<\/a> in January \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 70 outlets shut and nearly 1,000 jobs were lost, while 96 shops were\u00c2\u00a0 saved.<\/p>\n

Unite national officer Louisa Bull called today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s news \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba devastating blow for the chain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hardworking and loyal workforce.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is another dark day for the UK high street, following hard on the heels of the collapse of Patisserie Valerie early this year,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bRestaurants are not being helped by the current economic uncertainty, although those businesses like Jamie Oliver\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s that dashed for expansion in recent years seem particularly precarious.\u00c2\u00a0 As ever, it is the workers at the restaurant and in the supply chain who bear the heavy cost of boardroom decisions.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Bull added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite, which has some members working in the Jamie\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Italian chain, is seeking urgent assurances that the staff will be protected and paid all the money they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re owed, including wages, holiday and redundancy.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
