{"id":18120,"date":"2019-05-28T15:18:28","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T14:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18120"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:28","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:28","slug":"bromley-library-workers-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18120","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Enough is enough&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Bromley library workers will strike continuously from Thursday, June 6 to demand full staffing of Bromley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The strike is also part of a campaign by Unite to give a big pay boost to workers employed by social enterprise leisure services\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 giant Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 50 library staff, who are employed by GLL, voted by 98 per cent to strike on pay and also on issues specifically relating over\u00c2\u00a0 the running of Bromley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 14 libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Bromley dispute relates to GLL bosses not filling vacant posts; asking staff to be managers without paying the proper rate for the job; and failing to pay wages owed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite is seeking a six per cent increase in basic pay from April 2019 for its hundreds of\u00c2\u00a0 members working for GLL in more than 140\u00c2\u00a0 leisure centres and libraries in 16 London boroughs, as well as in Belfast.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said,\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe near unanimous vote for strike action by our Bromley library members sends a strong message to GLL bosses that: \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Enough is enough\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members will walk out on\u00c2\u00a0June 6 and strike until a settlement is reached \u00e2\u20ac\u201c this action will lead to the closure of the borough\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 14 libraries,&#8221; he added<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe regret the inconvenience this will cause the public, but this strike has been a long time coming caused by the profit-hungry GLL with a management committed to ruthlessly salami-slicing our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pay and employment conditions,&#8221; Kasab went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe evidence for this is incontrovertible &#8211; GLL promised the Tory-controlled Bromley council that it would implement library service cuts of over 25 per cent if it were awarded the contract to run this much-loved public service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGenerally, profitable Greenwich Leisure Limited has a poor reputation as an employer and is always looking to maximise profits at the expense of the dedicated workforce which ensures the smooth running of leisure centres and libraries across the UK on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGLL still has time before the Bromley strike starts on 6 June to sit down and talk with Unite to resolve these outstanding issues \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Unite is standing by for such negotiations.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bromley library workers will strike continuously from Thursday, June 6 to demand full staffing of Bromley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s libraries. &nbsp;
