{"id":18158,"date":"2019-06-03T13:48:46","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T12:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18158"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:27","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:27","slug":"workers-back-pay-transparency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18158","title":{"rendered":"Workers back pay transparency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A majority of workers support radical pay transparency to tackle growing inequality, a new survey reveals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The YouGov poll of 2,000 full-time staff found that 56 per cent backed making all individuals\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 financial information such as monthly income and tax returns open to the public as is done in countries such as Finland, Sweden and Norway.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>About a third of those surveyed said they opposed the idea, while 11 per cent were undecided. Jobs website Indeed, which commissioned the poll, said they believed this was the first time evidence has been revealed showing wide-scale support for pay transparency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pay transparency in Norway has been the norm for more than 200 years \u00e2\u20ac\u201d since the early 1800s, every citizen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s earnings are made available to the public. In Sweden, every worker\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pay information can be accessed from tax authorities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The YouGov survey comes in the wake of recent research revealing the extent of entrenched inequalities in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ethnic pay gap<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unite last week called for greater pay transparency to help tackle a<a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/bme-record-employment-pay-gap\/\"> yawning ethnicity pay gap<\/a> that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s seen black and asian minority ethnic (BME) workers lose out on \u00c2\u01413.2bn each year as their pay lags behind their white colleagues doing the same work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union highlighted the ethnic pay gap when it was revealed last week that a record number of BMEs are in work \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the latest figures, however, belie the fact that BMEs are much more likely to be on zero-hours contracts and other forms of insecure work. Black male graduates, for example, face a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098pay penalty\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of 17 per cent compared to their white counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite national officer for equalities Harish Patel said that pay transparency would be key in tackling racial pay inequality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLike reporting gender pay gap data, making ethnic pay gap reporting mandatory would help reduce the pay penalty workers now face simply for being non-white,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165\u00c2\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another ground-breaking report published last week revealed the e<a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/low-paid-fall\/\">xtent of regional inequalities with the UK<\/a>. The report, by Lord Bob Kerslake, former head of the civil service, found stark inequalities between the South and the North in a range of key measures, from pay to social mobility to income levels, life expectancy and more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on\u00c2\u00a0today&#8217;s survey, Indeed head UK economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/inequality\/2019\/jun\/03\/uk-workers-back-pay-transparency-fight-inequality-labour\">Pawel Adrjan told the <em>Guardian<\/em><\/a> that he believed attitudes were changing toward the idea of discussing pay openly, which has long been considered taboo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPerhaps that is in part due to the huge interest that gender pay gap reporting has gathered, but perhaps more so thanks to the new generation of younger workers with different views on money and the workplace,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;It started with conversations with colleagues&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The difference pay transparency can make to individual workers was recently highlighted by Unite member and former RBS worker Lucy Williams. <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/rbs-worker-public-unequal-pay\/\">In an exclusive interview last month<\/a>, Lucy told UniteLive how she came to know that she was being paid a shocking \u00c2\u014131,610 less than her male counterpart for doing the exact same job with equivalent experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know the full extent of the pay disparity at first,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she told UniteLive, recounting how she first came to know that something was not quite right with her pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt just started with conversations with colleagues. You realise something is wrong when you learn that your male colleague is the sole breadwinner in his family, supporting his stay-at-home wife and three children. On my salary at the time, I would never have been able to do that. I noticed too that he had been given a greater holiday allowance. It became increasingly apparent that we were on vastly different pay and benefits packages.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although Lucy eventually took on RBS in an equal pay claim with Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s support and won, it was only through Lucy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dogged determination to find out the truth about her colleague\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pay that enabled her to challenge such a shocking example of pay discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mandatory pay audits call<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unite national officer for equalities Siobhan Endean said gender pay gap reporting, which came into force in April last year, must be more radically transparent to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGender pay gap reporting as it stands now is little more than a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098name and shame\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 exercise if it isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t backed up with proper enforcement,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she told UniteLive in April. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s only a requirement for companies with 250 employees or more \u00e2\u20ac\u201d if we want real transparency it should apply equally to all firms.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTo implement real change, all employers should be forced to carry out detailed pay audits and take action on any disparities they find. We know from the equal pay audits Unite and other unions have negotiated with employers that they make a real difference \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time they were made mandatory.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner welcomed today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s survey results on pay transparency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTackling rising pay inequality \u00e2\u20ac\u201d whether we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re talking about gender or racial pay gaps, or the increasing pay gap between workers and their CEOs \u00e2\u20ac\u201d is one of the greatest challenges of our time,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Radical pay transparency that exposes inequality and applies equally to all, alongside a properly funded enforcement mechanism to take action on pay inequalities, are absolutely necessary if we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re to create a fairer world where prosperity is shared by all.
