{"id":18187,"date":"2019-06-06T12:02:10","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T11:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18187"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:26","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:26","slug":"ford-bridgend-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18187","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Gross industrial sabotage&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has condemned Ford for treating its workers \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdisgracefully\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 after news broke today (June 6) that the car firm would be closing its engine plant in Bridgend, with the potential loss of 1,700 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union has called on Ford to urgently rethink its decision, or else face the threat of industrial action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that the Bridgend site in south Wales, which has been in operation for 42 years, is set to close by September 2020, in 15 months\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The news is another blow this year to the beleaguered British car industry \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in February, Honda announced it would be <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/honda\/\">shutting its plant in Swindon<\/a> in 2021, with the loss of 3,500 jobs, while Nissan said it would <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/unite-government-nissan-x-trail-loss\/\">cancel plans to make the new X-Trail model<\/a> at its Sunderland plant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest decision from Ford comes at a time of continued Brexit uncertainty, against a backdrop of declining demand in key international markets such as China. British carmakers have also had to contend with a drop in the demand for diesel cars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Betrayal<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But Unite has highlighted that Ford\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision to shut its Bridgend plant makes little business sense, especially given that the UK is Ford\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest European market, and the firm holds first and second place in UK car sales.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner branded Ford\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision today an \u00e2\u20ac\u015bact of gross industrial sabotage if it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t urgently reverse these closure plans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInstead of betraying workers who have worked tirelessly to make Bridgend one of the most efficient engine plants in the world, Ford bosses should be rebalancing global engine production from Mexico and India to Bridgend,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is a global yearly market of some 500,000 for the Dragon engine and we demand our fair share of that.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Turner sent a message of solidarity to affected workers in a video today as he pledged that Unite would\u00c2\u00a0stand behind its members in whatever action they decide to take:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cU2JecxR1VM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Turner highlighted Ford\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s success in the UK despite not producing a single vehicle in here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf Ford wants to sell vehicles in this country it has a responsibility to maintain a strong manufacturing footprint here, not run off into the sunset to cheaper markets where sales are low but profits high,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Turner warned that Unite representatives across all Ford sites in the UK are gearing up to ballot for industrial action if this decision is not reversed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFord bosses should be in no doubt,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite will not stand back and let Ford turn its back on its loyal UK workforce and allow our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 livelihoods to be shredded because they are cheaper and easier to fire than their counterparts elsewhere in the world.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Dark day for Wales&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unite has highlighted too how the decision to close the engine plant will be a massive blow to the local Wales economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional secretary Peter Hughes called today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s news \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba very dark day for Wales\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur longstanding prediction that Ford had a long term plan to exit from Bridgend has finally today been exposed,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe stark reality of a plant closure and the devastation that it would bring is now staring us all directly in the face.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hughes noted that the closure would have \u00e2\u20ac\u015ban enormous impact on the wider Welsh automotive supply chain leading to thousands of additional job losses outside of Ford\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFor our members within Ford Bridgend and their families who rely on the high quality employment, today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s news could not get any worse,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he warned. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur message to them today is that Unite is determined to use all of its strength and resources to try and steer Ford away from proceeding with this catastrophic decision.
