{"id":18383,"date":"2019-07-04T16:12:56","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T15:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18383"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:03","slug":"barking-dagenham-unite-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18383","title":{"rendered":"Leading the way"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham is the first council in the capital to throw its weight behind Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pioneering Construction Charter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Construction firms planning to work on Barking and Dagenham building projects will now need to meet the standards laid down in the charter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The charter commits to working with Unite in order to achieve the highest standards in respect of direct employment status, health &amp; safety, standards of work, apprenticeship training and the implementation of nationally agreed terms and conditions of employment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Darren Rodwell, leader of Barking and Dagenham Council will join Vince Passfield, Unite deputy regional secretary at the Town Hall in Barking to sign the charter at 10.30am on Thursday, July 4.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vince Passfield, Unite deputy regional secretary for London and Eastern said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBarking and Dagenham is the first London borough to back Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pioneering Construction Charter. The charter combines the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s procurement power with Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s influence in the workplace to ensure construction projects under the control of the borough meet the highest standards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWorkers will have the right to speak out on safety issues and be paid a fair rate for the job. The charter means there will be no blacklisting of workers,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vitally, the charter also protects workers from the scourge of bogus self-employment. It ensures construction workers are directly employed instead of paying \u00c2\u014120-30 a week to payroll companies\u00c2\u00a0 just to get their wages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Darren Rodwell, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re proud to be the first London council to sign Unite union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Construction Charter, paving the way for many other London boroughs to get on board and ensure best practice is adopted across the capital.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re an ambitious borough and there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plenty of development to come for the benefit of our local residents.
