{"id":18552,"date":"2019-07-31T18:01:41","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T17:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18552"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:56:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:56:00","slug":"uk-auto-industry-faces-collapse-in-cliff-edge-brexit-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18552","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Take no-deal off table now&#8217; call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Investment in the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s car industry\u00c2\u00a0faces collapse from the threat of a cliff-edge Brexit new figures show \u00e2\u20ac\u201c leading to renewed calls from Unite for prime minister Boris Johnson to take no deal off the table.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Automotive sector investment crashed more than 70 per cent to just \u00c2\u014190m in the first six months of 2019, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smmt.co.uk\/2019\/07\/uk-car-production-falls-20-in-first-six-months-as-new-data-reveals-330-million-no-deal-mitigation-bill\/\">figures<\/a> published today (31 July) show.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only \u00c2\u014167m of this was direct investment from car firms \u00e2\u20ac\u201c compared to the \u00c2\u0141330m industry wide spending on Brexit contingency plans \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with \u00c2\u014123m coming from government research spending on electric cars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The SMMT said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe vast majority of manufacturers have suspended plant and product spending in the UK amid ongoing uncertainty.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive added that disruptions to sector supply chains through border delays and tariffs caused by a no deal exit from the EU would \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthreaten the very viability of the industry\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hawes said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have confidence in the future without confidence we can get a deal.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The SMMT said car manufacturers have spent \u00c2\u0141330m planning for Brexit, including stockpiling parts, introducing new IT systems and bringing forward factory shutdowns to meet the previous Brexit deadline of 29 March.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, UK car production fell by 20 per cent during the first half of the year, with June being the thirteenth consecutive month production has declined.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;PM can&#8217;t bat this aside&#8217;<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the figures, Unite&#8217;s assistant general secretary for manufacturing Steve Turner said, &#8220;Prime Minister Johnson and his government cannot bat this aside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is a \u00c2\u0141330m hole in investment into the UK auto sector because money must now be diverted into no deal preparations, draining the life out of the industry. That is money that ought to be creating new jobs and investing in new models and a future dedicated to the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More so, the sector&#8217;s own representative body is now saying that the direction being pursued by the government is so reckless it is now a threat to the very existence of the car industry in this country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is something we will never accept. There are 850,000 workers who depend on this sector, right across the country. These jobs and communities matter.
