class=\"s2\">ere<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> today (2 August) warned against opting to pay millions of pounds in compensation to airlines for cancelled flights and causing passenger misery, rather than going the extra mile to give hardworking staff a fair pay rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">The warning from Unite comes ahead of expected crunch talks at the conciliation service Acas later today, with planned <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/strike\/\"><span class=\"s3\">strike action<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"> for Monday 5 August and Tuesday 6 August looking likely to go ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">An<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> indicative vote of security guards, firefighters, engineers, passenger service operatives and passenger service drivers, and all members involved in the dispute<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> closes at <\/span><span class=\"s2\">5pm<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">If the offer is rejected as expected, talks at averting Monday and Tuesday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s strike will begin immediately. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Unite regional coordinating officer Wayne King said<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAll the indications are pointing to an overwhelming rejection by our members of the revised offer which, in reality, offers little more than the \u00c2\u01413.75 extra a day that the original offer did for many workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Decent pay rise\u00c2\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf members do reject the pay offer and Heathrow bosses dig their heels in, then there is a risk the airport is seen to prefer paying millions in compensation to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/airlines\/\"><span class=\"s3\">airlines<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"> and needlessly causing misery for the travelling public, instead of sorting the dispute by going the extra mile and giving its workforce a decent pay rise.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Strike contingencies by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/heathrow\/\"><span class=\"s3\">Heathrow Airport<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"> include the airport ordering airlines to cancel flights under procedures for temporarily reduced capacity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Through the procedures, Unite understands that airlines are set to receive \u00c2\u014126 per passenger on board every cancelled flight in compensation from the airport. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Unite estimates that approximately 88,000 passengers in total could be disrupted if 20 per cent of flights are cancelled on both days of the strike action, amounting to compensation of \u00c2\u01412<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.3m<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> for the airlines affected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">The total bill could reach \u00c2\u01414.6m if a further two days of planned action on Friday 23 August and Saturday 24 August go ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Unite suspended a two-day strike for Friday 26 July and Saturday 27 July to consult with over 4,000 of its members involved in the dispute at Heathrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098<i>Deepening anger<\/i>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">The dispute comes amid deepening anger over pay disparities between workers doing the same job at the airport and the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span><span class=\"s2\">massive<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><span class=\"s2\">pay package of Heathrow Airport\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chief executive officer John Holland-Kaye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Last year the Heathrow boss received a 103.2 per cent pay increase with his basic remuneration package rising from \u00c2\u01412.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">1m<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in 2017 to \u00c2\u01414.2<\/span><span class=\"s2\">m<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">It takes Mr Holland-Kaye around two days to earn what some of the lowest paid Heathrow security guards earn in a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">Wayne <\/span><span class=\"s2\">said<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur low paid members will sacrifice a day\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pay if they go on strike and are only too aware of the disruption it will cause. However, they are at a point where they have had enough with being given crumbs while shareholders pocket billions in dividends and the chief executive enjoys a pay rise of over 100 per cent. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTo add insult to injury they are also having to contend with widening pay disparities leading to airport security guards employed after 2014 earning up to \u00c2\u01416,000 less than colleagues hired before that date.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">He added, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf, as expected, our members reject the revised pay offer, then we would urge Heathrow Airport\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bosses to take the sensible option to end this dispute.
