Stoke-on-Trent city council<\/span> has <\/span>been accused <\/span>of<\/span> \u00e2\u20ac\u015brobbing Peter to pay Paul\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 over plans <\/span>to axe about 250 jobs so that it can give a financial boost to children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unite said th<\/span>e <\/span>council, controlled by a coalition of Tories and City Independents, <\/span>should <\/span>reconsider the cuts<\/span>,<\/span> which are rooted in a<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>discredited <\/span>austerity<\/span><\/a> regime<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The cuts\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 proposal – to be considered by the full council on 17 October \u00e2\u20ac\u201c comes in the wake of a report by Ofsted inspectors that was highly critical of the running of the authority\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s services.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Stoke<\/span> council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/span> Labour group leader <\/span>Mohammed Pervez<\/span> said <\/span>the crisis in children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s services has arisen because of funding cuts in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>Hundreds of hard working and loyal council workers are now facing job losses as a direct result of the failings of the current administration. We should never have been put in this position. There are far too many children in care now. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>This is because this council previously cut services<\/span><\/a> that were supporting troubled families. Other similar <\/span>local authorities<\/span><\/a> have far fewer children in care. This is a council in severe financial crisis with no clear leadership. They are bankrupting our council.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Financial cudgels\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/i><\/p>\n

Unite regional officer Mick Stevens said<\/span> the proposed jobs losses are another<\/span> example<\/span> of the <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>adverse impact of nearly a decade of the Tories taking the financial cudgels to local government funding<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat we have here is a classic case of ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. Cutting about 250 jobs from services across the council to give a much-needed improvement to children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s services should not be an \u00e2\u20ac\u0098either or\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 decision<\/span>,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI will be meeting Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s reps to discuss the proposals and I have asked for a meeting with Labour councillors regarding our serious concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is clear that the staff are being betrayed by an unholy alliance of Tories and City Independents that believes in a discredited austerity regime with funding cuts being their Holy Grail.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t believe that the residents of Stoke-on-Trent are best served by this unpalatable diet of cuts and call on councillors to urgently reconsider the plans.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Community branch for Stoke has launched an <\/span>online petition<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>protesting the cuts<\/span> that has<\/span> already attracted more than 770 signatures and closes on 23 September.<\/span><\/p>\n
