Government plans to immediately end freedom of movement in the event of a no deal Brexit would dwarf the Windrush scandal, shadow home secretary Diane Abbott has warned.<\/p>\n

Unite condemned the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dangerous handling of the Brexit process and urged EU members to call the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dedicated Brexit helpline<\/a> if they have concerns about their immigration status.<\/p>\n

Commenting on home secretary Priti Patel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans to impose same day border restrictions if there is no deal on October 31, Abbot said unregistered EU citizens would be \u00e2\u20ac\u015bin the exact same situation as the Windrush<\/a> people\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

Abbot told the BBC that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s reckless Brexit<\/a> policies were pushing the UK towards a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcatastrophe\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 as 2m EU citizens residing in the UK had not registered for settled status because they have been told the deadline was December 2020.<\/p>\n

She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI think it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to create chaos, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to be very problematic for business, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to be very difficult for EU nationals.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere are currently three million here altogether, a million have registered for settled status, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no possibility of two million registering between now and October 31, and then those EU nationals that were here but haven’t registered for settled status will be in the exact same position as the Windrush people.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Heading for a catastrophe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere will be people that came here perfectly legally, but will not have the paperwork to prove that and will have all sorts of problems with employers and the NHS<\/a> and so on. The way Boris is doing it is heading to a catastrophe (that) will make Windrush look like a minor blip.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite has launched a specialist helpline to assist migrant workers concerned about immigration issues as the UK leaves the European Union.<\/p>\n

The helpline, operated by Unite legal services, has been introduced to provide Unite members, who are concerned about Brexit and what effect it will have on their right to live and work in the UK, with advice on their legal options.<\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary for legal services, Howard Beckett said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s treatment of migrant workers, many of whom now feel that they are no longer welcome in the UK is nothing short of disgraceful.<\/p>\n
