A Trump trade deal after a no deal Brexit would be the NHS\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdeath knell\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, campaigners have warned.<\/p>\n

US pharmaceutical firms are intent on ending health service agreements that keep the cost of drugs and medical products down as part of a trade deal with UK that the Tory government is desperately seeking.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Office of the US Trade Representatives has released a document spelling out American objectives for a post-Brexit trade agreement with the UK.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As well as wanting \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfull market access for US products\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, American pharmaceutical companies want an end to price controls on NHS drugs, which they describe as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bunreasonable\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without the caps, the NHS could be forced to pay American prices \u00e2\u20ac\u201c potentially resulting in costs for operations rising by up to six times and the price of some medicines increasing 20 fold.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For example, Nexium, an acid reflux drug, costs 66p a pill in the UK, while in America the price rockets to \u00c2\u01417.40.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hip replacements in the US can cost as much \u00c2\u014137,000, compared to just \u00c2\u01417,500 in Britain.<\/p>\n

Co-chair of campaign group Keep Our NHS Public, Dr Tony O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Sullivan, said promises<\/a> from Boris Johnson that the NHS would not be offered up as part of a trade deal with the US are worthless.<\/p>\n

He told the Mirror<\/em><\/a>, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe verbal assurances from Johnson that the NHS won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be in trade deals are nothing more than hot air.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had false assurances that the Government isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t privatising the NHS when it is already.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA trade deal with the US would be the death knell of the NHS and would nail down the market in the NHS for ever.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said Johnson and other hard Brexiteers are intent on toadying up to the Trump regime at the expense of the British public.<\/p>\n
