Health unions have demanded that the government rule out a no deal Brexit, saying it could \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdevastate\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 the NHS and result in<\/span> \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfatal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span>medicine short<\/span>ages.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In a joint<\/span> TUC<\/span> statement<\/span>, 11<\/span> organisations<\/span> representing health care professionals<\/span>, including Unite, the British Medical Association<\/span> and the Royal College of Nursing<\/span>, warned that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno responsible government\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 would risk a no deal <\/span>Brexit<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>A no-deal Brexit could devastate the NHS and social care. And if this government goes ahead with it, health and care workers will be on the frontline.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs the <\/span>Yellowhammer<\/span><\/a> report makes clear, a no deal could cause significant disruption to the supply of medicine, lasting up to six months.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMany medicines, including life-saving agents for cancer diagnosis and therapy, cannot be stockpiled and for those that can, those stockpiles could run out.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fatal delays<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese kinds of shortages and delays can be fatal. No responsible government should take that risk.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail <\/span>called on the government to<\/span> \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>unequivocally guarantee<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span> th<\/span>e right of<\/span> 65,000 European health and care staff <\/span>to<\/span> continue to live and work<\/span> in the<\/span> UK<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheir contribution to the health service is invaluable and necessary for its smooth running.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is sad that the atmosphere generated by Brexit has led many of them to reconsider their future in the UK, where their expertise is so needed.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The joint statement also warned that no deal Brexit would hit funding for <\/span>health<\/span> and care <\/span>services.<\/span><\/p>\n

The statement warned<\/span>,<\/span> \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>We know that the stronger our economy, the more funding we can dedicate to the <\/span>NHS<\/span><\/a> and social care.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTreasury assessments show that a no-deal scenario would shrink our economy by \u00c2\u0141<\/span>90bn<\/span>, reducing the money available for the NHS and other vital public services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Decade of austerity<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAfter a decade of <\/span>austerity<\/span><\/a>, health and social care budgets across the country are under immense pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith many care providers already in difficulty, a hit to the public finances could have additional knock-on consequences for the NHS.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith waiting times rising, operations being cancelled and yet another winter crisis lo<\/span><\/a>oming, the health service cannot weather a long-term economic shock.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe call on the government to take no deal off the table.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n
