{"id":1871,"date":"2014-10-15T13:33:31","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T12:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=1871"},"modified":"2014-10-15T13:33:31","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T12:33:31","slug":"employment-limbo-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=1871","title":{"rendered":"Employment limbo land"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (October 15) jobless fall figures might appear welcome news \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but Unite warned if you scratch the surface those same figures reveal an economic recovery that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s passing people by \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as the wage siege continues and the world of work becomes more insecure.<\/p>\n<p>Average earnings, including bonuses, increased by just 0.7 per cent in the year to August, up by 0.1 percentage point on the previous month \u00e2\u20ac\u201c according to the latest figures from the office for national statistics.<\/p>\n<p>The figures mask the truth about the nature of these jobs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c so-called self-employment and part time work have both increased.<\/p>\n<p>Self-employment now makes up almost 15 per cent of total employment in the UK, 279,000 higher than a year ago, while part-time work has reached a record high of 6.8m.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a part time recovery built on the back of low wages and an explosion of self-employment which is leaving millions in an employment limbo land, without rights, security or guaranteed income,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite general secretary Len McCluskey.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government needs to look at this phenomenon and honestly assess what it means for the nation.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>But it would seem that an honest assessment of the true situation from the government is currently unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Guardian<\/em>, prime minister, David Cameron, tweeted, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe biggest-ever fall in unemployment in history, taking it below 2m, is great news. Our plan is working, but there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s still much more to do.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>Len McCluskey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis Tory-led government also needs to face up to the fact that people have seen their incomes drop in real terms by a staggering \u00c2\u01411,600 a year on their watch, forcing families to choose between heating and eating this winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is not the basis for a sustainable recovery.
