{"id":18827,"date":"2019-09-11T12:06:28","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T11:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18827"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:55:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:55:34","slug":"support-period-dignity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18827","title":{"rendered":"Support period dignity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Addressing the TUC in Brighton\u00c2\u00a0on Tuesday (September 10), Unite delegate Bridie McCreesh called out her employer Newry Mourne and Down District Council in support of a motion on period dignity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis motion raises the importance of dignity and respect \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the indignity caused by the pig-headed ignorance of some employers I want to expose here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI work at Newry Mourne and Down District Council \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and let their name ring out in shame across this hall. The Council management tell me they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve fully signed up to Period Dignity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWell, Congress, let me tell you what their idea of dignity looks like at the local council-run Leisure Centre.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt looks like a so-called \u00e2\u20ac\u0098pink bin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of sanitary products kept at the public reception.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt looks like the bizarre set up where women using the changing rooms are expected to get dressed, walk back to the reception and request a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098special sticker\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Walk of shame\u00c2\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bArmed with that sticker they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re expected to do a walk of shame to this \u00e2\u20ac\u0098pink bin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to get to the sanitary products they need.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCan you imagine what will happen when you ask young women of 13 or 14 to do that walk of shame?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCongress, let me tell you what management say when they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re challenged on this ridiculous, degrading set up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey say that it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t matter because no one who uses their leisure centres could possibly experience period poverty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd when you remind them that the centre is used by local school? Well, apparently that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just the school\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s problem.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCreesh said that while is is right that campaign incredible success is celebrated, every \u00e2\u20ac\u015bignorant, backward, stone-age employer be put on notice here and now\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nShe said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will name and shame each and every one of them.
