{"id":18850,"date":"2019-09-11T10:44:31","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T09:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18850"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:55:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:55:34","slug":"labour-corbyn-workers-rights-tuc-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18850","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Change is coming&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn outlined a truly transformative vision of a future for working people under a Labour government in his speech at TUC conference on Tuesday (September 10).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Corbyn pledged to lead the fight against a no-deal Brexit, he also spelled out precisely what the party in power would do to bring about \u00e2\u20ac\u015bchange that gives power to the true wealth creators \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the workers\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 in what he called \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe biggest extension of rights for workers that our country has ever seen\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Sectoral bargaining and trade union rights<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This will include establishing a Ministry of Employment Rights, whose core work will be rolling out collective bargaining across the economy sector by sector.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a system they have in many of the most successful economies around the world,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Corbyn said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt prevents undercutting on wages,\u00c2\u00a0fosters workplace stability and encourages businesses to invest in productivity.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s only by acting together, collectively, that workers can really make their voice heard.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Corbyn pledged that in his first 100 days of Labour taking office, they would repeal the Tory Trade Union Act and empower unions to continue doing their work to defend workers. Trade unions would be granted the right of entry into all workplaces to organise and represent their members, and trade union members would also be allowed to make their voices heard more easily, through electronic and workplace balloting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Enforcement<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But the Labour leader highlighted that the government too must play a bigger role in the defending workers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c specifically in ensuring employment laws are enforced.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bToo many employers are getting away with flouting laws,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNearly half a million people are still being paid less than the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll put a stop to that. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll create a Workers Protection Agency with real teeth, including the power to enter workplaces and bring prosecutions on workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 behalf.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re a worker with a boss who makes you work extra hours for no pay or forces you into dangerous situations,\u00c2\u00a0you deserve a government that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s on your side and ready to step in to support you.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Among other enhanced rights hinted by Corbyn in his speech, and later spelled out in an address by shadow labour minister Laura Pidcock, is ending in one fell swoop bogus-self employment by creating only two employment categories \u00e2\u20ac\u201c workers and those who are genuinely self-employed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A future Labour government will also introduce a civil enforcement system to ensure compliance with gender pay auditing, and will give all workers the right to flexible working, and ensure employers comply with their requests.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A statutory Real Living Wage will be implemented and would be set at \u00c2\u014110 an hour by 2020 for all workers 16 and older. Unpaid internships would be banned, as would zero-hours contracts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Corbyn quoted the <em>Financial Times<\/em>, which accused Labour of being \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdetermined to shift power away from bosses and landlords to workers and tenants\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWell there has been no shortage of rather unkind reporting about our party over the last few years,\u00c2\u00a0but this time they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got it absolutely right,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Empowering the people<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Labour leader went on to highlight other policy priorities of the party, including putting workers on company boards and giving the workforce a 10 per cent stake in large companies, which would pay a dividend of as much as \u00c2\u0141500 each year to each employee.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd we will give tenants more rights including caps on rent rises,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd that principle of empowering people doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just apply to the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll bring rail, mail, water and the national grid into public ownership,\u00c2\u00a0so the essential utilities that people rely on are run by and for the public,\u00c2\u00a0not just shareholders.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Corbyn pledged too to work with trade unions to kick start a Green Industrial Revolution, which would create hundreds of thousands of highly skilled, well-paid jobs in renewable energy and green technologies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd we will locate these new industries in parts of the country that have been held back by successive governments that have focused on the richest in the City of London,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Closing his speech to thundering applause, Corbyn said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe establishment will come after us with all they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got, because they know we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not afraid to take them on\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re creating a society of hope and inclusion, not poverty and division.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on Jeremy Corbyn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s speech, which prompted a standing ovation, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bCorbyn hit the nail on the head \u00e2\u20ac\u201c change is long overdue and it is coming.
