{"id":18866,"date":"2019-09-11T12:43:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T11:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=18866"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:55:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:55:34","slug":"strengthen-our-internationalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=18866","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Strengthen our internationalism&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>On the final day of the TUC conference on Wednesday (September 11), Unite delegate Taj Salam spoke in support of a motion on International Labour Organisation (ILO) campaigning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted how Unite campaigned with the global trade union movement to secure landmark ILO standards on tackling violence and harassment in workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat means recognition in the convention of the risks of violence and harassment faced by\u00c2\u00a0public-facing workers\u00c2\u00a0-\u00c2\u00a0from transport workers like me, to hospitality\u00c2\u00a0and health\u00c2\u00a0workers,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat means recognition of racial abuse against black workers, against migrant workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat means recognition of gender-based violence \u00e2\u20ac\u201c violence and harassment against women and girls, and the impact of domestic abuse and violence at work,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Taj added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015b And that means recognition of homophobic, Bi-phobic and tran-sphobic hate crimes.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Taj went on to note that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwe live in turbulent and dangerous times\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 as he pointed out the rise of the far-right and its aim to dismantle the international rules-based system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs borders return and division is sowed between us we need to nurture and strengthen our internationalism,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said that as working people mark the centenary of the ILO, it was important to note that international standards are needed now more than ever \u00e2\u20ac\u201d an including an end to child labour, forced labour, discrimination and violence and harassment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese are the core labour standards that protect us all,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is an outrage that the\u00c2\u00a0UK government\u00c2\u00a0continues to undermine these basic labour\u00c2\u00a0standards.
