Unite delegate Jessie Jacobs, who is also running to be the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first female directly elected metro mayor in the Tees Valley, gave an inspiring speech at the Labour Party Conference on defending local services on\u00c2\u00a0Wednesday (September 25).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI am sick of injustice. I am tired of hearing of another life lost to domestic violence, drug addiction or suicide,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI am sick of services that should be there to prevent this, to support those in need, being cut through austerity.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Jacobs, speaking in support of a composite on local government cuts, told conference of how earlier this year, the rape counselling service in Teeside was advised their funding would need to be halved.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe rape counselling service that helps hundreds of women every year, offering hope, recovery, rehabilitation and guidance to be halved<\/em> — at a time when violence against women is a national issue,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n

Jacobs lambasted the former prime minister Theresa May when she said austerity was supposedly over.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWell if it is over, then why are the councils still having their funding cut?\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she pointed out. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf it is over, why are youth services still closing and Unite members who work in them still facing redundancies? If it is over, then why are councils being made to make a decision to cut vital support to rape survivors?\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Calling for a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdesperately needed\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Labour government, she argued that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBoris Johnson has shown himself once again today to be a liar, a self-serving bully who has no respect for democracy. He needs to go. We need him and his Tories out\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

She urged support for rape survivors, and those workers running crisis services; for young people, for working families \u00e2\u20ac\u015bstruggling to feed their children\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and for the planet and for the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfuture of all of us\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c everyone \u00e2\u20ac\u015bneeds the [Tories] out\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t fear Boris Johnson,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Jacobs went on to say. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will go to a general election, with people across this nation unified alongside the only party that truly represents the 99 per cent.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will come together and we will get him out and we will get Jeremy Corbyn in,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she concluded. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bEverything depends on this.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
