{"id":19116,"date":"2019-09-29T08:00:12","date_gmt":"2019-09-29T07:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19116"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:55:09","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:55:09","slug":"labour-ends-universal-credit-unite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19116","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Beacon of hope&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The announcement\u00c2\u00a0on Saturday (September 28) that a Labour government will abolish the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098cruel and miserable\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Universal Credit (UC) system has been warmly welcomed by Unite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has been campaigning for the reform of the system since its inception but given its manifold problems and the human suffering it led to, switched to calling for its end.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UC is meant to streamline six existing welfare payments into one, but Unite said that the introduction has been \u00e2\u20ac\u0098inherently flawed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0resulting in\u00c2\u00a0unacceptable delays, the soaring use of food banks and some claimants becoming suicidal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite head of community Liane Groves said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe announcement today by the Labour party is to be warmly welcomed. Unite has been campaigning ceaselessly in recent years to see the end of UC which will affect up to seven million people in and out of work if it is fully rolled out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe system is inherently flawed as it makes people wait five weeks without any money coming in,&#8221; she added. &#8220;People, desperate to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads, are plunged into a sea of debt from which they can never escape.
