{"id":19250,"date":"2019-10-10T16:39:42","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T15:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19250"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:55:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:55:07","slug":"unite-manufacturing-reps-second-gove-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19250","title":{"rendered":"No answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The government \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdoes not care\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 about the damage a no deal Brexit will do, Unite said yesterday after meeting with cabinet member Michael Gove.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A delegation of long-serving manufacturing workers with deep knowledge of their industries met with Gove, the minister responsible for coordinating the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brexit strategy, in a bid to persuade ministers to comprehend the enormity of a no deal Brexit on working communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was the second meeting Unite reps have had with Gove over the issue, <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/manufacturing-meeting-gove-face-to-face\/\">with the first taking place in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the meeting, Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bConvenors from across our <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/manufacturing\">manufacturing<\/a> industries met with Michael Gove again today, to get answers to the serious questions we put to him a month ago about stopping a no deal Brexit We didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get any.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe can only conclude that the government does not care about the consequences of political decisions it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s taking right now. It does not care about the industries, jobs and apprenticeships that will be destroyed, or the families and communities that rely on them. It simply does not care.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, the reps pressed home the devastating impact crashing out of the customs union and single market without a deal will have on their industries and communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before the meeting, Unite convenor at British Steel Tony Pearson said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBritish Steel supports the jobs and livelihoods of 25,000 people directly and across our supply chain. We produce a product vital to our country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manufacturing base but it will be hanging by a thread if no deal is the <a href=\"unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a> outcome.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI come from a community that was hit hard by the impact of 1980\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Conservative ideology under Mrs Thatcher. We will not let another government destroy our jobs and communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese are people we are talking about, with bills to pay, families to raise and communities to support.\u00c2\u00a0 We will not allow them to be treated as collateral damage for those hell bent on a no deal or bad Brexit.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mick Graham, Unite convenor at Jaguar Land Rover said he doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t \u00e2\u20ac\u015brecognise the rosy glow that Mr Gove and other ministers are trying to put on their Brexit strategy\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt bears no relation to the realities of Jaguar Land Rover where we rely on frictionless trade and open customs arrangements to ensure the just in time delivery of the 20m components our plants consume every day,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Graham added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bRight now, I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look my colleagues in the eye and tell them that everything will be fine because it won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be.
