Endemic bullying and pay issues are driving RSPCA staff out of their jobs, Unite has warned.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The RSPCA<\/a> is facing a \u00e2\u20ac\u015brecruitment and retention\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 crisis that risks impacting upon the animal charity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s work, the union said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Adding to long established workplace issues, RSPCA management are pulling out of a negotiated pay deal and attempting to force workers onto a performance-related pay scale.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite, which represents hundreds of RSPCA staff, said the switch \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcould exacerbate plummeting staff morale in an organisation where bullying has been endemic and not dealt with effectively.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite regional officer Jesika Parmer said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat we have here is a management that wants to take a sledgehammer to a carefully crafted incremental pay scheme and introduce a performance-related pay<\/a> scheme.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut how you evaluate \u00e2\u20ac\u0098performance\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 when it comes to rescuing abused animals remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe RSPCA already faces a recruitment and retention crisis and morale is low \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and this will get worse if pay and terms and conditions are eroded.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Unite survey conducted over the summer revealed \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba culture of bullying<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 at the RSPCA, with 31 per cent of the 1,700-strong workforce either being bullied directly or witnessing such behaviour.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Recent canvassing by the union has also revealed that 80 per cent of staff feel that performance related pay is inappropriate given the current negative workplace culture.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

More than 75 per cent of staff reported that performance related pay is not suitable for their role and 93 per cent do not feel that the current pay proposals are open or transparent.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The RSPCA said performance related pay is being considered because of \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba challenging financial environment\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, however Unite pointed out that the charity receives \u00c2\u0141140m a year in donations and that its financial reserves are \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhealthy\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe management\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hardline attitude can be summed up by the imposition of a below inflation one per cent cost of living increase this month without the agreement of the union,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Parmer said.<\/p>\n
