There was relief amongst Bombardier\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s world class manufacturing workforce<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0yesterday after it was revealed that a buyer has been found for the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Northern Ireland operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite welcomed the news that Bombardier has been sold to US firm Spirit AeroSystems<\/span> in a deal worth around \u00c2\u0141<\/span>1bn<\/span>, saying that\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>investment for growth must follow<\/span> the sale.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Canadian firm\u00c2\u00a0Bombardier<\/a><\/span> put its Northern Ireland operations<\/span>, which employ about 3,600 people,<\/span> up for sale in May<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Kansas-based Spirit is already a major supplier to Airbus and the firm is planning on increasing its Airbus market by buying<\/span> Bombardier\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>operations in<\/span> Northern Ireland<\/span>, which produce<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0wings and other parts for the aerospace company.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The <\/span>Belfast <\/span>factor<\/span>y<\/span> will also continue to supply<\/span> Bombardier\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s business jet programmes. <\/span><\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015b(This) <\/span>deal will see Bombardier\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s footprint here transfer as a whole to one of the world’s largest independent producers of aero-structures. This outcome comes off the back of a Unite delegation of shop stewards led by myself flying to meet the Bombardier chief executive and senior management team in Montreal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Excellent track record in aerospace\u00c2\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are pleased that Bombardier has heeded our call to be a responsible seller and the need for Bombardier aero-structures production to be transferred as a whole to a company with an <\/span>excellent track record in aerospace rather than a <\/span>short-termist<\/span> hedge fund. It is a sale that offers hope for a positive future for Bombardier workers in <\/span>Northern Ireland<\/span><\/a> and their colleagues in the supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI have written to Spirit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chief executive officer Tom Gentile and look forward to meeting him in the weeks ahead to discuss future investment and plans for growth and jobs.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

Unite regional coordinating officer<\/span> Susan Fitzgerald said it was<\/span> no surprise that Bombardier has been able to find a commercial bidder for its operations<\/span> in Northern Ireland. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>These workers and the skills base they possess are world class and offer any prospective\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/a>owner a huge platform for future growth.<\/span> Unite welcomes this announcement and hopes that it will be followed up by investment for growth in the future<\/span>,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Fitzgerald said. <\/span><\/p>\n
