{"id":19444,"date":"2019-11-13T16:22:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T16:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19444"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:54:53","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:54:53","slug":"young-peoples-hopes-labour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19444","title":{"rendered":"Young people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hopes for Labour"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s national body for young workers met yesterday to talk about what they would like to see from a Labour government.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As well as discussing the general election, the National Young Members Committee also sent their solidarity and support to striking McDonald\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers fighting for improved terms and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting in Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s head office in Central London, the committee talked about how Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s policies could help to improve the lives of <a href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/why-join\/membership-types\/unite-young-members\/\"><span class=\"s2\">young workers<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RyTRDv4XmRo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Committee member Amy Roe works in the fossil fuel sector. Conscious that her industry has a limited shelf life, she supports the radical reforms Labour have put forward for a <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/renewable-energy\/\"><span class=\"s2\">green energy<\/span><\/a> revolution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI support Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s push for a green climate deal. My job obviously has an end date and rightly so, but there needs to be a transition from fossil fuels into renewables and I think Labour can do that.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The committee also discussed the need to reinstate <span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"x-apple-ql-id:\/\/\/word\/unitelive.org\/tag\/nhs\">NHS<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>bursaries to tackle chronic staff shortages and give the next generation of nurses and health professionals the opportunity to train without being crippled by debt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Committee member and NHS worker James Mason said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhy would you want to get yourself into \u00c2\u014150,000 worth of debt for a job where you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to be overworked and only paid \u00c2\u014130,000 a year?\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Committee member Katie Laing began her working life with a job at a fast food chain. Katie then moved to the finance sector but the memory of the low pay she received has made her a strong advocate of Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans to implement a single <a href=\"x-apple-ql-id:\/\/\/word\/unitelive.org\/tag\/minimum-wage\"><span class=\"s2\">minimum wage<\/span><\/a> that applies to all ages and end zero hour contracts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI started work at 16 on \u00c2\u01414.35 an hour. Not only was it horrendous working for such low wages and on a zero hour contract, but the cost of getting too and from work really ate into my pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI was put on late shifts after all the buses had finished and had to get taxis home or put on 4am starts, which meant getting a taxi to work.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WgaToQB_GuI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Committee member Johnathon Elson said he is particularly enthusiastic about Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans to repeal the Trade Union Act and strengthen <a href=\"x-apple-ql-id:\/\/\/word\/unitelive.org\/tag\/workers-rights\"><span class=\"s2\">workers rights<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Engineering worker Elson said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been a victim of those repressive bills, I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want that to happen to other people. I got made redundant at my previous job after taking a dispute to my management about call out fees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPeople put on redundancy notice were told they could carry on working if they signed up to the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call out policy. I took issue with that and then they put me on my notice and a week later I was made redundant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe legislation has been weakened so much that they didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have prove that there was a loss of work, they just had to make it seem like there was. There was no justification for it except that I was bringing problems to them.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cDr9RYnZd6E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The committee also issued a statement in support of striking McDonalds workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23McStrike&amp;src=typed_query\"><span class=\"s2\">#McStrike<\/span><\/a>, organised in concert the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Union (BFAWU), sees workers demand a \u00c2\u014115 an hour minimum wage, guaranteed hours and an end to age discrimination pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Unite National Young Members Committee said: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe send our utmost solidarity and support to all McDonald\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers taking industrial action and would encourage everyone throughout our labour movement to support the strike.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese workers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c predominantly young workers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are leading the way against insecure work.
