Delegates at Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sector conferences<\/span> in Brighton<\/span> have been meeting <\/span>this week to discuss the formation of<\/span> industry-wide<\/span> response<\/span>s\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>to issues like insecure work<\/span>, <\/span>outsourcing<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> automation.<\/span><\/p>\n

At packed<\/span> \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Industrial Plan to Win\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 fringe meetings,<\/span> d<\/span>elegates\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>developed<\/span> plans to bring leading stewards together to define the core industrial challenges<\/span> in their sectors<\/span> and decide their co-ordinated response.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>We are bringing together stewards from the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098top 10\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 companies in each industrial sector<\/span> and<\/span> asking <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098<\/span>can we all push for the same agreement on automation or on agency working<\/span> and<\/span> win sector-wide agreements that shift the industrial landscape\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/span>,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 <\/span>explained<\/span> Unite\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>executive officer<\/span> Sharon Graham<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Core industrial issues<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s industrial sectors are dominated by a few large employers who set the pace on core industrial issues like insecure work and <\/span>automation<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In comparison<\/span>,<\/span> many\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>union agreements <\/span>are limited to one workplace or a specific group of workers.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For instance, <\/span>Unite has 36,000 agreements with employers<\/span>, and the union sits at the bargaining table 33,000 times a year<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015btop 10\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 strategy is about bringing<\/span> workers in different <\/span>workplaces and firms<\/span> together so they can<\/span> bargain<\/span> as a <\/span>collectiv<\/span>e<\/span>,\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>allowing them to<\/span> rais<\/span>e<\/span> standards<\/span> in their sectors as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have to bargain to scale if we are to win to scale. We can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t confront these sort of challenges through thousands of individual negotiations, shop by shop<\/span>,<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span> said Graham.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a muscular strategy to push back in an industrial landscape characterised by stagnating pay, declining collective bargaining and rampant job insecurity and outsourcing of labour<\/span>.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

Graham <\/span>added that<\/span> such work was vital at<\/span> a<\/span> time when workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/span>wages<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>have stagnated, the distribution of wealth has gone back to proportions not seen since 1930 and there has been massive increase in job insecurity, fragmentation and automation.<\/span><\/p>\n
