{"id":19531,"date":"2019-11-22T14:52:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T14:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19531"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:54:52","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:54:52","slug":"gp-at-hand-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19531","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;No place in our NHS&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Dozens of doctors, health workers and NHS campaigners took to the streets of East London to protest against the latest threat to general practice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GP at Hand, run by technology firm Babylon Health <a href=\"https:\/\/morningstaronline.co.uk\/article\/babylons-burning-cash\">which has links to various\u00c2\u00a0 high-profile Tor<\/a>ies, is an app-based GP service which targets younger, healthier and more affluent patients.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Protestors highlighted on Thursday (November 21) the fact that the service is in effect de-funding traditional GP surgeries, because they rely on the 80 per cent of people who are healthy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the same cohort GP at Hand is now poaching \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to subsidise the 20 per cent who are older or have more complex health needs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest controversy surrounding GP at Hand is that, after a summer consultation which received little input, NHS England is quietly poised to changed the rules so that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s much easier for the app-based service to operate and spread.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNHS England are now proposing that in any CCG area where GP at Hand has more than 1,000 patients, the service will automatically be handed an APMS [Alternative Provider Medical Services] contract \u00e2\u20ac\u201c something that traditionally people have to compete for,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Doctors in Unite (DiU) chair and GP Jackie Applebee told UniteLive at Thursday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s demo. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnder these changes, GP at Hand will simply be given a contract. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s very unfair.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19537\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gp-at-hand-jackie-1024x730.jpg\" alt=\"gp at hand jackie\" width=\"640\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gp-at-hand-jackie-1024x730.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gp-at-hand-jackie-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gp-at-hand-jackie-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gp-at-hand-jackie.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Applebee (pictured above) also pointed to the fact that GP at Hand is not evidence-based \u00e2\u20ac\u201c serious problems have been discovered, for example, with the service\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Artificial Intelligence \u00e2\u20ac\u0098chat bots\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, which often misdiagnose patients\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 ailments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;By the offices of Babylon&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But fuelled by patients\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 lack of awareness over its services, GP at Hand\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gponline.com\/gp-hand-third-largest-patient-list-england\/article\/1665792\">total patient list has soared to nearly 70,000<\/a>, with 4,017 new patients signing up in the month to November. The numbers are only expected to increase as GP at Hand has now begun operating in Birmingham, with talks to open up in Manchester in 2020 as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tower Hamlets, where Thursday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s protest was held, has the largest GP at Hand patient list in the country, with about 6,000 patients. Standing in front of hoarding emblazoned with GP at Hand branding at a shopping centre in Canary Wharf, the demonstrators sang songs including \u00e2\u20ac\u0098By the Offices of Babylon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, set to the tune of the popular reggae song.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite member Frances Cornford (pictured below),\u00c2\u00a0a historian who campaigns for the NHS in her local area, explained to UniteLive why she was taking a stand against GP at Hand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19533\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Frances-Cornford-Unite-1024x750.jpg\" alt=\"Frances Cornford-Unite\" width=\"640\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Frances-Cornford-Unite-1024x750.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Frances-Cornford-Unite-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Frances-Cornford-Unite-768x563.jpg 768w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Frances-Cornford-Unite.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBabylon Health is essentially cherry-picking younger, fitter patients through GP at Hand,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey join, thinking they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re getting a full GP service and then they realise that they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re only going to see a GP remotely, through the Internet, and then they leave again. Research has shown that 25 per cent of GP at Hand patients leave within two years. And this whole process comes at an enormous cost to the NHS. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unfair, but the Conservative powers that be want to encourage this sort of thing. People shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be fooled \u00e2\u20ac\u201c even though GP at Hand is technically within the NHS, it is totally contrary to the values and the spirit of the NHS. Since then I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve become more and more involved in the campaign.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Phil explained that he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s standing up against GP at Hand now especially during the general election.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve seen the mess GP at Hand has created in Tower Hamlets, and I feel now it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s especially important to highlight these issues on the eve of the general election,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m hoping for a Labour government because there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no one else who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to resolve this crisis we are now facing in the NHS.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Applebee agreed and urged patients considering registering at GP at Hand to think twice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bDon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t blame the health service, blame the government,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bSuccessive Tory-led governments have only increased funding for the NHS by one per cent each year since 2010 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c before then, increases averaged about 4 per cent annually. The whole NHS has been squeezed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSo I would say to people, if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re thinking of registering with GP at Hand because you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get an appointment with your GP, I understand your frustrations but this is not the way to go.
