{"id":19566,"date":"2019-11-28T17:42:09","date_gmt":"2019-11-28T17:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19566"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:54:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:54:51","slug":"whirlpool-poverty-wages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19566","title":{"rendered":"Whirlpool \u00e2\u20ac\u0098poverty wages\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Workers at Whirlpool\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Bristol tumble dryer factory have been forced to go on strike over poverty pay even though it will cause them hardship over the Christmas period.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pay is so low at the factory that some workers have to visit food banks in order to feed themselves and their families.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workers are asking for a pay increase of \u00c2\u01411.25 to \u00c2\u014110 an hour. Unite has suggested that the increase in pay could be offset by a reduction\u00c2\u00a0in\u00c2\u00a0the pay that workers receive during the factory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shutdown periods.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After Whirlpool offered a miserly 1.25 per cent increase \u00c2\u00ad\u00e2\u20ac\u201c equivalent to a 13p an hour rise \u00e2\u20ac\u201c more than 90 Unite members were balloted for strike action with an overwhelming majority (80 per cent) voting in favour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a result, two 24 hour strikes have been scheduled for 12 December and 6 January.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Membership\u00c2\u00a0of\u00c2\u00a0the union has tripled in recent years as pay has worsened and increasing numbers of staff are finding themselves in financial difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workers are also demanding that agency staff who have worked full time at the factory for a number of years are offered permanent contracts with Whirlpool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Ken Fish said:\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis strike will add extra strain to workers already facing the financial pressures that Christmas brings. Despite this the workforce are determined to take a stand until they receive a fair wage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bToo many staff at the Whirlpool factory are struggling to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe company should be ashamed that some of its workforce are\u00c2\u00a0being\u00c2\u00a0forced to resort to food banks to survive.
