{"id":19601,"date":"2019-12-03T16:35:13","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T16:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19601"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:54:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:54:51","slug":"greenwich-leisure-limited-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19601","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Damning report&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A \u00e2\u20ac\u0098damning\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 report on controversial employer social enterprise leisure services\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 giant Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), which has contracts with councils in London and Belfast, is published today (December 3) by Unite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report Greenwich Leisure Limited \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a shameful enterprise catalogues an organisation, with a \u00c2\u0141300 million turnover, that relies heavily on zero hours\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 contracts, refuses to recognise trade unions, and whose claim to be \u00e2\u20ac\u0098worker-led\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is spurious as the worker representative on the board in the recent past has always been a senior manager.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report comes as the 50 library staff in Bromley, employed by GLL, continue their strike which started on\u00c2\u00a0June 6 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c one of the longest industrial disputes in modern times. The strike is over staffing and other issues specifically relating to GLL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stewardship of Bromley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 14 libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To highlight the report, Unite has organised a lobby tomorrow (December 4) at GLL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s headquarters, Middlegate House, The Royal Arsenal, London, SE18 6SX from 12.00 until 14.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite will also be demonstrating when GLL holds a Christmas ball on Friday (December 6) at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PJ.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bToday we expose the truth about GLL, not just in Bromley, but across its wider operations which employ about 14,000 people. It is a damning indictment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe ask a serious question of GLL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s partner organisations, including local authorities, which claim to act ethically \u00e2\u20ac\u201c do they want the reputational damage of being linked with GLL?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe GLL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s flawed business model is based on zero hours\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 contracts and job cuts which seriously erodes the public services, such as leisure centres and libraries, it has pledged to maintain,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite recognises we are in for the long haul with GLL whose ethos makes a mockery of the term \u00e2\u20ac\u0098social enterprise\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.
