{"id":19770,"date":"2020-01-10T14:59:10","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T14:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19770"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:54:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:54:35","slug":"blackburn-darwen-lifeguards-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19770","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Unfair and unjust&#8217; pay cut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Lifeguards at Blackburn and Darwen leisure centres will take part in strike action on Saturday (January 11) over Blackburn and Darwen borough council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision to cut their wages by up to \u00c2\u01413,000 a year, Unite has said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dispute centres on a new structure which will see 14 lifeguards remain in employment but on a lower grade than their present role. The new structure comes after some of the roles were re-evaluated under the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s job evaluation scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These changes have reduced lifeguards pay by up to \u00c2\u01413,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lifeguard members, who are responsible for the safety of people in the swimming pools, at Blackburn Sports and Leisure Centre and Darwen Leisure Centre will take part in in discontinuous\u00c2\u00a0strike action consisting of a series of 24-hour stoppages commencing at\u00c2\u00a0just past midnight on January\u00c2\u00a011,\u00c2\u00a014, 18, 21, 25 and 28 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Tanya Sweeney said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe reality is that some of our members are being asked to work for less pay.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u01413,000 a year is a lot of money.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a group of workers who do an incredible job of keeping people safe,&#8221; she added.\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe life guard role was evaluated 10 years ago and the job has not changed, so cutting pay at this stage is unfair and unjust.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe feeling about this is strong.
