{"id":19786,"date":"2020-01-14T17:00:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T17:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=19786"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:54:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:54:35","slug":"sanctuary-care-contracts-in-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=19786","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Something is clearly wrong&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite is urging local authorities who have contracts with Sanctuary Care to bring them \u00e2\u20ac\u0098back in-house\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 after a criminal investigation was launched into one of its care homes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union, which has more than 100 members across the Sanctuary Group, has consistently warned that Sanctuary\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0098relentless\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0attacks on the pay and conditions of low paid staff would put vulnerable people at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite made the comments after it was revealed a criminal investigation into Garside House care home in Westminster was launched following a\u00c2\u00a0CQC inspection\u00c2\u00a0that found instances of serious medication errors, residents being wrongfully deprived of liberty, dehydration, understaffing and a lack of training.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The running of the nursing home was outsourced by Westminster city council in 2015 in order to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098deliver savings\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. Some Sanctuary staff are paid just \u00c2\u01418.54 an hour \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00c2\u01412 below the London living wage \u00e2\u20ac\u201c despite the firm making a profit of \u00c2\u014177m last year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Sanctuary Group, which in addition to care provides social housing, supported living and commercial services, was also the subject of a year long Channel Four\u00c2\u00a0Dispatches\u00c2\u00a0investigation last March. The investigation uncovered the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098shocking conditions that tenants of one of Britain&#8217;s biggest housing associations live in, and the effect those conditions have had on vulnerable tenants&#8217; health.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe CQC report on Garside House shows that something is clearly wrong with the way Sanctuary is operating. Unite members at Sanctuary Care have consistently warned the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s relentless cost cutting to staff pay and conditions would put vulnerable people at risk,&#8221; said Unite regional officer Tabusam Ahmed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSanctuary\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s management cannot be held directly responsible for the actions of a few individuals.
