An old geezer down our boozer<\/p>\n

He says his name is Joe.<\/p>\n

The numbers on his arm explain<\/p>\n

A life of pain and woe.<\/p>\n

Someone said he was a German \u00e2\u20ac\u201c<\/p>\n

Or he might have been a Pole<\/p>\n

Who as a child saw the pit of hell<\/p>\n

And never grew up to be whole.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He tells of children from windows thrown,<\/p>\n

Starvation, disease, hope gone,<\/p>\n

He stood helpless, scared and alone,<\/p>\n

While others, just looked on.<\/p>\n

He never saw his family again<\/p>\n

Taken away and gassed,<\/p>\n

While he had to face his future apart<\/p>\n

Just another of the damned amassed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In a nightmare world where all hope had gone<\/p>\n

He was marched from camp to camp<\/p>\n

Trying to stay alive on the road<\/p>\n

In the biting snow and damp.<\/p>\n

Then at Buchenwald\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s door salvation came<\/p>\n

From soldiers to rescue not slay,<\/p>\n

Finding new homes for these children of pain<\/p>\n

In a land not too far away.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Joe drinks his pint, says he once met the Queen<\/p>\n

We asked him \u00e2\u20ac\u0098What did you say?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n

He told her, \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Ma\u00e2\u20ac\u2122am this could happen again<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098If hatred has its way.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098For everywhere there are those that jeer<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098At others \u00e2\u20ac\u0098not quite the same\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098With darker skins, or different clothes, or beliefs with another name.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098We must unite and challenge these views<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Whenever we hear them spoke,<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Together we stand, united we fall<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Under the terror of racism\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s yoke.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n

I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see old Joe again<\/p>\n

I heard he moved away.<\/p>\n

It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s now our turn to spread his words<\/p>\n

And recall what he had to say.<\/p>\n

To break the wheel of racism\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hate<\/p>\n

To love and value all –<\/p>\n

Or else we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll face a dreadful fate<\/p>\n

Because we ignored this call.<\/p>\n
