Responding to chancellor Rishi Sunak’s package of support for businesses\u00c2\u00a0announced\u00c2\u00a0last evening (Tuesday, March 17) and the prime minister’s pledge to do \u00e2\u20ac\u0098whatever it takes’ to support people and jobs through the corona virus crisis, Unite’s Len McCluskey has said that\u00c2\u00a0the union stands ready to play\u00c2\u00a0it’s part\u00c2\u00a0throughout this time of crisis.<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

“It is abundantly clear that we need a package of measures equal to the public health and economic emergencies now upon us,” commented Len McCluskey, Unite general secretary.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Urgent and considerable action is needed by government to avert personal and industrial catastrophe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Unite is pleased to have heard the prime minister and chancellor say very clearly that they `will do whatever it takes’ to protect public health and the economy’s health.\u00c2\u00a0 We will hold them to that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“However, we remain\u00c2\u00a0extremely concerned that workers’ and individuals’\u00c2\u00a0own\u00c2\u00a0capacity to\u00c2\u00a0act\u00c2\u00a0on the public health advice will remain\u00c2\u00a0seriously\u00c2\u00a0compromised because the direct\u00c2\u00a0economic support has not yet\u00c2\u00a0been provided by government.\u00c2\u00a0 This must change and urgently.\u00c2\u00a0 Providing wage support and covering rents must be a priority.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“It is welcome that those hit by the virus will have a three month mortgage holiday should they need it, but what about the vast majority of people who rent?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0They need to know that they\u00c2\u00a0can put food on the table and keep a roof over their families’ heads.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Only then will they feel able to play their part in tackling this public health emergency.<\/p>\n

“We urgently\u00c2\u00a0need\u00c2\u00a0for the government to introduce now the sort of measures that we have seen implemented in our competitor nations, including paying workers 75 per cent plus\u00c2\u00a0of their salary while they are forced to be at home as has been introduced in Denmark and Holland.\u00c2\u00a0 UK workers deserve the same efforts and assistance.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
