{"id":20208,"date":"2020-03-19T16:28:19","date_gmt":"2020-03-19T16:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=20208"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:44:29","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:44:29","slug":"unite-plea-to-chancellor-to-stop-uk-economic-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=20208","title":{"rendered":"Give us income pledges now call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Len McCluskey,\u00c2\u00a0leader of the influential Unite trade union has urged the government today (Thursday March 19)\u00c2\u00a0to act now to reassure working people that their incomes will be guaranteed if they are laid off from work because of the\u00c2\u00a0coronavirus\u00c2\u00a0pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite general secretary Len McCluskey is calling on the government to act by this week&#8217;s end to announce a comprehensive incomes support package to reassure millions of worried workers that this disease, which poses huge risks to public health,\u00c2\u00a0will not punish them economically too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Unite leader is also calling for a meeting with the chancellor and his team so that the unions can lay out the impact of this virus on workers&#8217; incomes and future\u00c2\u00a0job security.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The calls now for major government action to defend incomes\u00c2\u00a0are coming from right across the political and social spectrum,&#8221; commented Unite general secretary Len McCluskey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He added, &#8220;I urge Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak to hear them and to\u00c2\u00a0act swiftly.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I am calling now\u00c2\u00a0for an urgent meeting between the Treasury and trade unions,\u00c2\u00a0including\u00c2\u00a0Unite, so that we can\u00c2\u00a0set\u00c2\u00a0out\u00c2\u00a0the reality of this virus for working people and the comprehensive\u00c2\u00a0package of\u00c2\u00a0measures that are needed to stave off nationwide penury.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8216;Millions will fall into poverty&#8217;\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A comprehensive package of incomes support must be forthcoming by the end of this week or millions will fall into poverty. This will ruin our economy and take us into a recession economists say will be unlike anything seen before.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working with our sister unions in Europe to monitor the support to workers there. The steps being taken by the Italian and Spanish governments, for example, are sensible and show what can be done by the state in a time of need. From the US to New Zealand governments are doing the responsible thing in acting to provide wage-level support.\u00c2\u00a0UK workers cannot be left to fend for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While loans\u00c2\u00a0may work for some businesses, our experience has been\u00c2\u00a0that those monies don&#8217;t\u00c2\u00a0get any further than the boardroom.\u00c2\u00a0Workers are the people who spend in our shops and high streets. They need a steady supply of\u00c2\u00a0cash\u00c2\u00a0on a level that recognises the cost of living\u00c2\u00a0directed into\u00c2\u00a0their\u00c2\u00a0pockets or our economy will seize up.\u00c2\u00a0Our meagre benefit allowances just won&#8217;t cut it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a time like never before and it demands action from government like never before.\u00c2\u00a0My call now to the prime minister and his chancellor, is please act. Working people are facing an economic catastrophe.
