{"id":2023,"date":"2014-10-27T14:57:45","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T14:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2023"},"modified":"2014-10-27T14:57:45","modified_gmt":"2014-10-27T14:57:45","slug":"half-term-library-chaos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2023","title":{"rendered":"Half-term library chaos"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Libraries in Greenwich face disruption and closures this week as staff strike for two days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Staff have been unhappy with the management since the library was taken over by social enterprise Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GLL has said that it will not replicate any pay rises that are awarded to local government workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe strikes this week will impact on parents wishing to take their children to local libraries. Half-term is always a time when libraries are particularly busy,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Onay Kasab, Unite regional officer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The strikes will take place on Thursday October 30 and Friday October 31. They follow a solid strike on October 14 when 86 senior library assistants and library assistants walked out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have warned GLL that there would be more industrial action, unless it gets around the negotiating table,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 added Onay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since GLL took over in 2012 its record has been \u00e2\u20ac\u0098disastrous\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, with one library already closed and the mobile service under constant threat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bDuring the last strike day, Unite members were subjected to disgusting abuse and threats from two workmen hired by the council to cross picket lines, open libraries and basically, try unsuccessfully to break the strike,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Onay Kasab.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only one of the borough\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 12 libraries was able to open on October 14.
