{"id":20267,"date":"2020-03-24T11:34:55","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T11:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=20267"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:44:29","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:44:29","slug":"boris-johnson-clarity-call-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=20267","title":{"rendered":"Clarity call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/covid-19-uk-lockdown\/\">Following on from an earlier s<\/a>tatement\u00c2\u00a0responding to the news that the UK would be put on lockdown amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey\u00c2\u00a0on Tuesday (March 23)\u00c2\u00a0 appealed to the prime minister to act swiftly to clear up the confusion about who can be at work and how insecure and self-employed\u00c2\u00a0workers will be supported economically.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Warning that the lack of clarity and absence of financial support for insecure workers are at odds with the national emergency, the\u00c2\u00a0appeal follows pictures this morning from London,\u00c2\u00a0the epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK,\u00c2\u00a0of packed construction sites and tube\u00c2\u00a0trains as workers continue to head to work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluksey\u00c2\u00a0urged the government to work more closely with trade unions in order to get the correct\u00c2\u00a0measures in place for\u00c2\u00a0working people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The prime minister has asked us all to play our part in the enormous\u00c2\u00a0national effort to save lives and beat the Covid-19 virus,&#8221; he said.\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;But the stark reality is that millions of\u00c2\u00a0workers are confused about whether or not they can or should be at work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the same time, the millions of self-employed and insecure workers across the country\u00c2\u00a0will dread being sent\u00c2\u00a0home because it means that they will have no wage,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government must work with trade unions to define the tougher isolation rules because we\u00c2\u00a0understand the reality of\u00c2\u00a0the workplace. Had the government talked to us beforehand, for example, we would have been able to spell out to them how their new measures would be met by workers in construction and its supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So\u00c2\u00a0I appeal to the prime minister and his government, please\u00c2\u00a0work with us in order\u00c2\u00a0to keep your promise to do whatever it takes.
