{"id":20797,"date":"2020-04-15T17:18:31","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T16:18:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=20797"},"modified":"2020-04-15T18:19:16","modified_gmt":"2020-04-15T17:19:16","slug":"end-ppe-postcode-lottery-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=20797","title":{"rendered":"End PPE postcode lottery call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The postcode lottery that exists in the supply and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) must end, Unite has told the government today (April 15).<\/p>\n<p>But in a letter to Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove, Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner says this can only happen when the government plays its role in bringing the full resources of the nation together in a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098heroic effort to see off the invisible enemy that is Covid-19\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>There are daily accounts of a postcode lottery in the supply and distribution of PPE, even in the NHS and care services, both in the media and directly to Unite\u00c2\u00a0from members on the frontline as well as\u00c2\u00a0manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus has had a massive on all NHS workers and social care staff. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bPressures on our ambulance members, for example, are unprecedented with the profession not currently being given the correct guidance as to whom they should take to hospital,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 explains Unite national officer for health Colenzo Jarrett-Thorpe.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey are also not being given the correct level of personal protective equipment (PPE) if they suspect a patient has Covid-19,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he continued.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAmbulance workers are putting their health, perhaps their lives, at risk, by not receiving the correct PPE and also by not receiving the correct fit test training to wear the PPE.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is urgently calling for ambulance workers to be given clear guidance regarding triaging which patients should be taken to hospital and more action on PPE which needs to be supplied to paramedics, so they are able to do their essential duties,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Thorpe added.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Fractured nature <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his letter to Gove, Turner pointed out that the fractured nature of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s response has led to local manufacturers and SMEs rising to the challenge by supporting services, such as hospitals, care homes and hospices that are close to their facilities. But isolated services are getting very little, and in some cases nothing, either from the NHS central distribution or manufacturers that have stepped in to help.<\/p>\n<p>Unite is calling for a specific minister for PPE, with cabinet level responsibility to coordinate the actions of government departments, to prevent this lottery deepening.<\/p>\n<p>Turner,\u00c2\u00a0who leads Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s campaigning work on PPE manufacture and availability in coordination with industry federations,\u00c2\u00a0says the efforts of individual government departments are at risk of going to waste without such a minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe current postcode lottery in respect of supply and distribution, even to our NHS and frontline care services must end,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 believes Turner. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis will only happen, however, when government plays its role, as only it can, in bringing the full resources of the nation together in a heroic effort to see off the invisible enemy that is COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are at war and thousands are dying. What is now needed is a wartime plan to coordinate our response and that requires a minister with authority, clout and nothing else to distract them from their sole purpose which should incorporate PPE and our need for ramping up our testing capabilities, which are woefully inadequate right now,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 added Turner.<\/p>\n<p>Ask any health care worker and they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d agree. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is humbling to see social media posts which show some NHS staff risking their lives as they go to care for patients with coronavirus,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 reports Colenzo Jarrett-Thorpe. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe situation is even direr in social care settings, as care staff do their utmost for the elderly with inadequate protective kit.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI think the public\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s patience with ministers is wearing very thin as they continue to say that there is enough PPE in the system, when there are numerous reports from frontline staff that this is simply not the case,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 adds Thorpe.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mounting frustration <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Steve Turner agrees. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bA workforce scared to go to work now because it feels exposed will not inspire confidence in others to return to work when that time comes. Our reps are fed up with our members being let down, a mounting frustration that\u00c2\u00a0their union shares.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWorkers are frightened \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and this will turn to anger,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner warns. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey want to know that the government recognises that its first duty is to protect the people of the country. They can signal that now, this minute, by putting someone in charge of PPE provision\u00c2\u00a0and testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis disease is no flash in the pan.
