{"id":20999,"date":"2020-04-23T15:53:54","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T14:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=20999"},"modified":"2020-04-23T15:53:55","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T14:53:55","slug":"knee-jerk-threat-to-399-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=20999","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Knee jerk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 threat to 399 jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The decision to axe 399 workers at Safran Seats UK, which makes commercial airline seats, has been branded as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098knee jerk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 as bosses should have continued to apply for the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s coronavirus job retention scheme (JRS).<\/p>\n<p>Unite is angry that more than 200 jobs are under threat at Camberley, Surrey, which the French-owned company intends to close. There are a further 187 proposed redundancies at Cwmbran in south Wales out of a workforce of about 1,250. The company has two other sites at Brackley, Northamptonshire and Braintree, Essex.<\/p>\n<p>Safran S.A. is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\">French<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multinational_corporation\">multinational<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aircraft_engine\">aircraft engine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rocket_engine\">rocket engine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aerospace\">aerospace<\/a>-component and defence company. It employs over 95,000 people and generated 24.64bn euros in sales in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unite is extremely concerned by Safran Seats UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision to announce the redundancy threat to 399 highly skilled workers, totalling 25 per cent of its workforce across its four UK sites,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite national officer for aerospace Rhys McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 job retention scheme, now extended until the end of June, that trade unions, including Unite, lobbied for was put in place to avoid this kind of knee jerk reaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is appalling that the company has not used this scheme to its full extent to buy time to look at alternatives to this massive jobs\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cull.
