{"id":21013,"date":"2020-04-24T12:51:16","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T11:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=21013"},"modified":"2020-04-27T10:24:41","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T09:24:41","slug":"heroes-and-zeroes-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=21013","title":{"rendered":"Heroes and zeroes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Each week amid the coronavirus epidemic, UniteLIVE has been highlighting the heroes &#8212; those who are risking their lives caring for others and making a difference in their communities &#8212;  as well as the zeroes, those who are taking advantage of the crisis to let us all down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are this week&#8217;s heroes and zeroes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>HEROES<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Frontline workers who&#8217;ve paid the ultimate price. <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of International Workers&#8217; Memorial Day on Tuesday (April 28), Unite pays tribute to the heroes who have died after contracting coronavirus. They put their lives on the line &#8212; often without adequate protective kit &#8212; to care for and help others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/fireman-turned-bus-driver-saved-21917492\"> Real Britain columnist Ros Wynne-Jones highlights<\/a> the story of Nicu Enciu, who served as a fireman in his home country of Romania before coming to the UK to work as a bus driver. Tragically, he died this month after contracting coronavirus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to join us for a minute&#8217;s silence at 11am on Tuesday, April 28 to mark International Workers&#8217; Memorial Day and honour all those who have died in work &#8211; and to demand the protections all workers need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"897\" height=\"696\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ros-unitelive.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21015\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Ambulance workers<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last several weeks, UniteLive has highlighted different frontline workers in the epidemic, from nurses to supermarket workers, delivery drivers, bus drivers and more. Today we pay a special tribute to ambulance workers, who like other NHS workers are risking their lives to save others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, Unite honoured Unite member Gerallt Davies, the first member of the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust to die with Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gerallt was based at Cwmbwrla Station in Swansea. He joined the Ambulance Service in 1994 and was awarded an MBE in 2019 for services to first aid provision in Wales. He was also the national operations officer for St John Ambulance Cymru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read our <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/his-loss-is-simply-immeasurable\/\">full story on Gerallt here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Ambulance-a-go-go22-1024x545.jpg\" alt=\"London Ambulance Service\" class=\"wp-image-1381\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>The Larder<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many community initiatives popping up around the country to support those most in need in the crisis, the Larder in Lancashire is making a massive difference in their community.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Larder is a social enterprise in Preston that promotes healthy, local and seasonal food. Earlier this week, nine-year-old Louie gave UniteLive readers some tips on social distancing. <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/how-to-social-distance-safely\/\">Find out more here.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1224\" height=\"1632\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/louie-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20943\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>ZEROES<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>Unsafe construction sites<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the beginning of the UK-wide lockdown, Unite has highlighted construction employers that are failing to implement social distancing and other safety measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Unite has launched a hotline for construction workers to inform the union whenever workers in the sector feel their health and safety is being compromised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more in the video below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Unite the union: Protect construction workers\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NIWYo-RuJs8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>Safran Seats UK<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite has called out Safran Seats UK for its decision to axe 399 jobs instead of taking advantage of the government&#8217;s job retention scheme to save jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Safran S.A. is a French multinational aircraft engine, rocket engine, aerospace-component and defence company. It employs over 95,000 people and generated 24.64bn euros in sales in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is extremely concerned by Safran Seats UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision to announce the redundancy threat to 399 highly skilled workers, totalling 25 per cent of its workforce across its four UK sites,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite national officer for aerospace Rhys McCarthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 job retention scheme, now extended until the end of June, that trade unions, including Unite, lobbied for was put in place to avoid this kind of knee jerk reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is appalling that the company has not used this scheme to its full extent to buy time to look at alternatives to this massive jobs\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cull.
