Reacting last night (April 28) to the British Airways announcement that it is to make 12,000 staff redundant, Unite slammed the move as a\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098heartless decision\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0and entirely at odds with the course of action followed by our European competitors as they seek a way through the pandemic crisis.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis devastating\u00c2\u00a0announcement comes on the\u00c2\u00a0day that\u00c2\u00a0BA staff joined together to lay to rest one of their own, a long-standing and much loved cabin crew member\u00c2\u00a0who tragically died from the coronavirus contracted while\u00c2\u00a0carrying out his duties bringing home loved ones from overseas to reunite concerned families,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite general secretary\u00c2\u00a0Len McCluskey.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis announcement will be felt as the stab in the back it undoubtedly is by the close knit BA family.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe say to BA’s boss\u00c2\u00a0Alex Cruz that this is a heartless decision in a time of national crisis. With the majority of BA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workers on furlough, we would have expected him to work with both us and the government to honour the spirit of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s job retention scheme.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

BA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions are out of kilter with those of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s neighbours. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bGovernments across Europe, in Spain, Germany and France are working with trade unions and airlines to rebuild back better, keeping people in work while the sector recovers.\u00c2\u00a0 We simply cannot understand as to why Alex Cruz is not doing the same, unless he has sought an opportunity to see other airlines fail, so that BA can profit.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Irresponsible, dangerous and destructive\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTo reject government support but then expect their own staff to pay the cost of such a misjudgement, is irresponsible,\u00c2\u00a0dangerous and destructive and is utterly at odds with the mood of the country at a time of crisis.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCreating unemployment is a conscious choice by an employer, not an inevitability.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

McCluskey continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis workforce has worked tirelessly, heroically and unnoticed throughout this crisis, in dangerous circumstances on the global\u00c2\u00a0transport frontline. A\u00c2\u00a0repatriation flight is without doubt rife with\u00c2\u00a0risk with the potential exposure of airline crew and staff. In recent weeks, they\u00c2\u00a0have played their part, with many volunteering for rescue flights, regardless of their own safety and often with little or no PPE equipment to help distressed UK citizens come home to their loved ones.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey simply do not deserve to be treated as a commodity to be disposed of in this way.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Unite values their sacrifice, as do the families that they have brought together and can be assured that their union\u00c2\u00a0will not tolerate this indecent mistreatment of these brave men and women.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis industry must pull together or many more working people will suffer the same fate as these 12,000 BA workers,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he warned.<\/p>\n
