This week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s heroes are especially poignant after Unite marked International Workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Memorial Day on Tuesday (April 28) to commemorate those who have lost their lives in work. And this week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s zeroes are as ever in the Unite spotlight as we aim to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098name and shame\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 their utter disregard for those who are keeping this country ticking over at a time of crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>HEROES<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>Bus workers<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bus workers have before appeared on our heroes list, and this week they deserve a special mention after they marked International Worker\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Memorial Day at 11am with a minute\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s silence paying tribute to their fallen brothers and sisters. Already at least 20 bus workers in London have died after contracting coronavirus, with the numbers continue climbing outside the capital too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On International Workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Memorial Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/honour-lives-lost\/\">Unite spoke to bus worker and rep Mustafa<\/a> who explained just how hard the last few weeks have been for his colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTensions are high amid this crisis after we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve lost so many members, especially given the shortage of PPE at the beginning of the crisis,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a sense of anger that these deaths could have been prevented. I myself was very close friends with one bus driver in Battersea who died \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really hit us all hard.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/walworth-depot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21092\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>Nissan workers<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite has hailed Nissan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0098outstanding\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 efforts in re-purposing its facilities to produce hundreds of thousands of pieces of much needed personal protective equipment (PPE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nissan was one of the first firms to answer Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call to produce PPE for use in the fight against coronavirus, with the car maker now delivering up to 100,000 face visors and 18,000 aprons per week to the NHS from its Sunderland plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting, Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s efforts in re-purposing parts of their manufacturing capabilities have been matched by our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 determination to produce vital PPE for frontline workers battling this terrible virus. Perhaps this will change as society re-evaluates what is important and what keeps a country functioning, providing the essentials of life. Unite has warned that their \u00e2\u20ac\u0098heartless decision\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 indeed could be unlawful and the union will be doing everything it can to put a stop to the redundancies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling on BA&#8217;s CEO Alex Cruz to think again, the general secretary of Unite, Len McCluskey said &#8220;BA&#8217;s decision to ignore the principle and intent of the job retention scheme and instead throw 12,000 workers onto the scrap heap is both unlawful and immoral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is unlawful because they are denying these workers the meaningful consultation that the law and common decency says that they are owed,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is immoral because BA has been taking taxpayers&#8217; money in recent weeks, money supplied on the proviso that the company put the workers on furlough while the industry reshaped.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The decision of sacking 12,000 staff members at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/British_Airways?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@British_Airways<\/a> is a &#8216;heartless decision&#8217; and a &#8216;stab in the back&#8217; of a dedicated workforce <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BritishAirways?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BritishAirways<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/171HUnEBfk\">pic.twitter.com\/171HUnEBfk<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d Unite London &amp; Eastern (@UniteLondonEast) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UniteLondonEast\/status\/1255424825004371971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>Government failures on testing <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unite this week slammed the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s slow response to testing essential workers such as NHS staff for coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criticism comes after health and social care secretary Matt Hancock pledged to be testing 100,000 people each and every day by the end of April. But with only three days to go until the end of the month, the government has fallen far short of its testing aims. On Saturday, just over 29,000 tests were carried out, while the government said it now has testing capacity of 50,000 a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting, Unite national officer for health Colenzo Jarrett-Thorpe said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government has been very slow, compared with countries like South Korea and Germany, in introducing an effective and fast testing regime to process the large numbers that need testing, starting with NHS staff and other key workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe World Health Organisation (WHO) said that: \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Test, test, test\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 was the way forward as long ago as 16 March as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098you cannot a fight a fire blindfolded\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c ministers were seriously behind the curve in responding to that challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/a-national-embarrassment\/\">read our full story here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1018\" height=\"443\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/testing.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21063\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>More employers failing to implement social distancing<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As many construction workers now head back to work, Unite has committed to calling out all those employers who are failing to implement health and safety measures such as social distancing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, a Fairfox property development site in Hayward&#8217;s Heath was caught red-handed not sticking to social distancing rules to keep their workers safe.
