{"id":2158,"date":"2014-11-07T15:26:08","date_gmt":"2014-11-07T15:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2158"},"modified":"2014-11-10T17:07:33","modified_gmt":"2014-11-10T17:07:33","slug":"smears-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2158","title":{"rendered":"Smears for fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite is taking action after\u00c2\u00a0the notorious tabloid, The Sun, published a two-page spread on Wednesday (November 5), falsely alleging that Unite wields undue influence on the Labour Party, in a cynical bid to undermine the party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leadership as the election draws near.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has referred the Sun and its chief political correspondent Kevin Schofield to the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) for printing wildly inaccurate statements about general secretary Len McCluskey and the union, as well as refusing the union a right of reply, as is required in clause 1 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcc.org.uk\/assets\/696\/Code_of_Practice_2012_A4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">editor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s code of practice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has found at least 10 factual inaccuracies or misleading statements in the story. At no point did the Sun contact Unite prior to publication to confirm the serious allegations made against the union, which violates the editor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s code\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dictum to \u00e2\u20ac\u015btake care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information, including pictures.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story, Unite and take over,\u00c2\u00a0 promised to expose the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfull extent of Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s takeover of the Labour Party\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and then went on to assert that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnearly one third of the party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s candidates lined up for next year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s election are backed by the union,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 as a result of Labour leader Ed Miliband\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s supposedly deferential relationship with Unite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s allegations were further propagated on The Sun\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s social media accounts and in a separate editorial.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey argued that the story was a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bsingle-minded effort to undermine the elected leader of the Labour Party\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6as the general election draws closer.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitetheunion.org\/uploaded\/documents\/00026-IPSO%20The Sun 06 11 2014 %282%2911-20450.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">letter to the press regulator<\/a>, McCluskey noted, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe officially support all 337 Labour Party nominees who so far have been selected for the 2015 election. There are no Unite candidates opposed to Labour party candidates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere are only Labour party candidates and Unite supports them all,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story made mention of the selection process in last year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Falkirk vote, referring to the incident as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bvote-rigging,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 despite Unite already having been unreservedly cleared of any wrongdoing following an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-23447279\" target=\"_blank\">internal Labour Party and police investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When Unite requested a right of reply the morning of publication, The Sun claimed the story was not about the union but instead was about the Labour Party, and so argued that a cursory quote from a Labour party official at the very end of the article was sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How could that be?
