{"id":21636,"date":"2020-05-21T17:07:11","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T16:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=21636"},"modified":"2020-05-21T17:07:12","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T16:07:12","slug":"ministers-are-at-sixes-and-sevens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=21636","title":{"rendered":"Ministers are at \u00e2\u20ac\u0098sixes and sevens\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite accused the government today (Thursday May 21) of being at \u00e2\u20ac\u0098sixes and sevens\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 over its London transport policy and plans to get commuters back to work.<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that the \u00c2\u01411.6bn government bailout &#8211; a combination of grant and loans -\u00c2\u00a0 for Transport for London (TfL), after the dramatic slump in passenger numbers, had too onerous conditions attached to it \u00e2\u20ac\u201c such as the re-introduction of congestion charges from Monday (May 18) &#8211; and that the funding was only for four months.<\/p>\n<p>Unite, which represents 20,000 bus workers in the capital where more than 30 have died from Covid-19, said that London\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mayor Sadiq Khan had actively engaged in making buses safer for its members and passengers.<\/p>\n<p>It contrasted Sadiq Khan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s involvement with that of Boris Johnson when he was London Mayor (2008-2016), who never once in those eight years met with the unions over key industrial issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere are two key issues here \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the short term and, often contradictory, government advice to get people back to work in London and the long-term financing of the London transport system, once the pandemic is over\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite London regional secretary Pete Kavanagh.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn terms of the \u00c2\u01411.6bn bail-out, it is due to run for four months only, with very significant questions remaining about the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need a financial template as to how we go forward then to provide a sustainable, financially viable and joined-up transport system post-lockdown\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Kavanagh said.<\/p>\n<p>Kavanagh believed transport secretary Grant Shapps needed to engage realistically with all stakeholders concerned about the future of transport across Greater London, including the trade unions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Blame game\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bMinisters have become adept at the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098blame game\u00e2\u20ac\u2122; first the scientists were being lined up and now it is Sadiq Khan, who is right to call for a new funding model which, in our view, must see sustained financial involvement from government in the years ahead.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>Unite is also concerned about the contradictory messages from government \u00e2\u20ac\u201c on one hand, encouraging people to return to work, but at the same time, telling them to avoid public transport.<\/p>\n<p>For a full return to work to happen, more trains and buses would need to run with the necessary financial underpinning.
