The proposed 1,000 redundancies, which will be on a voluntary basis, account for almost one quarter of the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is another heavy blow for our automotive industry and its dedicated workforce,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite national officer Steve Bush.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBentley is a name known around the world for the quality of its vehicles, thanks in large part to the expertise of this\u00c2\u00a0highly dedicated and superb workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTo ask 1,000 of them to leave the company, albeit on voluntary terms, is heart breaking for the workforce and their communities.\u00c2\u00a0 We are determined to support our members during this process to do what we can to\u00c2\u00a0mitigate the jobs lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite will ensure that all our members are properly advised and supported throughout this highly stressful and traumatic time,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>The unwelcome news comes at as the coronavirus outbreak is hitting UK manufacturing \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the sector\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workforce \u00e2\u20ac\u201c extremely hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bToday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s news is\u00c2\u00a0another sorry\u00c2\u00a0reminder of the battering this sector is taking, caught by a downturn in global demand which has then been supercharged by the global Covid-19 pandemic,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Bush.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is absolutely essential that the government works with the automotive industry and Unite to bring forward the sort of sector specific support we are seeing other governments deliver, in France and Germany, because for every automotive job that goes, four more will go in the wider supply chain,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members have shown their commitment to the brand over many years and this should not go unrecognised,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 added Unite Bentley convenor, Stuart Davis.\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015b2020 should have been Bentley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s best ever year but\u00c2\u00a0sadly it will now be remembered for all the wrong reasons.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Barckley Sumner\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bentley currently employs 4,200\u00c2\u00a0workers at its factory in Crewe, Cheshire.
