{"id":2218,"date":"2014-11-14T16:14:03","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T16:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=2218"},"modified":"2014-11-14T16:14:03","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T16:14:03","slug":"defence-workers-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=2218","title":{"rendered":"Defence workers strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Privatisation has not just infiltrated the NHS\u00e2\u20ac\u201dit looms large in every institution in our country, even in the Ministry of Defence (MoD).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nAfter facing an uncertain future of being sold off to the private sector next year, workers at the Defence Support Group were offered a paltry one per cent pay rise, and one that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s non-pensionable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIn response to the pay offer, the workers, who take on the vital task of maintaining, repairing and overhauling military equipment for the MoD, have decided to step up strike action next week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe 800 Unite members will begin a four-day strike on Monday (November 17), following a previous two-day strike action in October.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nAffected sites in next week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s walkout will include Bovington (Dorset), Catterick (North Yorkshire), Colchester, Donnington (Shropshire), Stirling and Warminster (Wiltshire).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite national officer for the MoD and government departments Mike McCartney argued that the pay offer on the table actual translates into a real terms pay cut.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFor many workers, this feels like a final act of betrayal,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe current DSG management can afford to give a decent pay rise to the workers who have made DSG such a success story in supporting our armed forces.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nMcCartney emphasised the need for a decent pay rise in the wake of the uncertainty of privatisation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith the sale of DSG to the private sector looming, our members want to take a decent rate of pay which can be consolidated for pension purposes to their new employer,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFeelings among our members are running high not just because of the insulting pay offer, but because of the uncertain future they face of being sold off to the private sector,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time management got back around the table and negotiated a meaningful settlement.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe strike itself is widely supported among workers throughout government.
