{"id":22308,"date":"2020-06-24T16:45:24","date_gmt":"2020-06-24T15:45:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=22308"},"modified":"2020-06-24T16:45:24","modified_gmt":"2020-06-24T15:45:24","slug":"invest-in-new-nuclear-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=22308","title":{"rendered":"Invest in &#8216;new&#8217; nuclear call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Comprehensive investment in the nuclear industry is one of the levers to kick-start the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s post-pandemic economy, with the promise of a low carbon future and the creation of tens of thousands of jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Unite was commenting on today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (June 24) blueprint for a nuclear future \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u015bForty by \u00e2\u20ac\u212250: A Nuclear Roadmap\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c produced by the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The NIA predicts \u00c2\u014133bn of added economic value and large-scale decarbonisation are possible, with the creation of 300,000 jobs and up to 40 per cent \u00e2\u20ac\u0098clean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 power on the cards by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe must look to the evolving shape of the UK economy in a post-Covid-19 world, and to where we are going to create the necessary jobs and apprenticeships to kick-start an economic revival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bComprehensive investment in \u00e2\u20ac\u0098new\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 nuclear will pave the way to such a future and also provide the low-carbon energy that people are demanding as we tackle the adverse impacts that we can witness already from climate change,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe back the NIA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s six-point blueprint for a sustainable and safe nuclear future and urge ministers to articulate their long-term commitment to a new era for nuclear power where it plays a vital role in the energy \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mix\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c without this commitment, it is difficult to see how the UK can meet its \u00e2\u20ac\u0098net zero\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pledge by 2050.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Unite endorsed the application by French energy giant EDF to the Planning Inspectorate for a development consent order (DCO) for Sizewell C on the Suffolk coast, with the prospect of 25,000 jobs during construction and 1,000 apprenticeships.
