Unite, last night (June 30) described the announcement that easyJet is intending to make 1,290 cabin crew redundant and close its hubs at Newcastle, Stansted and Southend airports in their entirety as yet another\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0098massive blow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 for this battered industry.<\/p>\n

This\u00c2\u00a0latest announcement of major job losses in aviation again highlights the failure of the government to provide urgently needed\u00c2\u00a0specific support to protect jobs and airports. This is in stark contrast to many other major countries which have provided multi-billion pound support packages\u00c2\u00a0for their aviation industries including France, Germany, Spain and the United States.<\/p>\n

The union is also questioning\u00c2\u00a0easyJet’s decision to make workers redundant\u00c2\u00a0given that the company has received a \u00c2\u0141600 million loan from the government and has also recently paid out \u00c2\u0141174 million as a dividend to shareholders.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is yet another massive blow to the aviation industry and our thoughts are with workers who face\u00c2\u00a0losing their jobs through no fault of their own,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite national officer for civil aviation Oliver Richardson.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is no need for this announcement at this time, especially since easyJet has taken a multi-million pounds\u00c2\u00a0government loan which it ought to be putting to use defending UK\u00c2\u00a0jobs.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a\u00c2\u00a0company with its priorities all\u00c2\u00a0wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 It has\u00c2\u00a0paid a multi-million dividend to its shareholders, borrowed hundreds of millions from the government to buy new aircraft and has fully utilised the jobs retention scheme.\u00c2\u00a0 It absolutely should not be allowed to make huge redundancies a few weeks later.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe latest announcement\u00c2\u00a0further\u00c2\u00a0demonstrates why it is absolutely essential that the government extends its job retention scheme for the aviation sector,\u00c2\u00a0which has been\u00c2\u00a0one of\u00c2\u00a0the industries\u00c2\u00a0worst hit\u00c2\u00a0by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

“We are now more than three months on since the Chancellor\u00c2\u00a0promised support for UK aviation.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ongoing failure to\u00c2\u00a0provide such\u00c2\u00a0support is directly resulting in huge job losses throughout the industry and is threatening the viability of airlines and airports alike.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe aviation industry is essential to the future prosperity of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s economy and it is essential that the UK government, steps up to the plate and provides specific support in line with other nations.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
