With less than 24 hours to go before the Chancellor delivers his financial statement, Unite is warning that\u00c2\u00a0companies in the aerospace supply chain have announced 5,030\u00c2\u00a0redundancies in recent days \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as work dries up because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and pushing the sector to the precipice.<\/p>\n

In the\u00c2\u00a0East Midlands 306 jobs have gone, while in the\u00c2\u00a0North East 420, in\u00c2\u00a0the North West 693, in Scotland 405,\u00c2\u00a0in the South West 643, in Wales 926\u00c2\u00a0and in the West Midlands 537 have been made redundant.\u00c2\u00a0 In Northern Ireland a massive 1,100 aerospace jobs have been axed.<\/p>\n

Along with the job cuts announced last week, Unite estimates some 10,000 UK aerospace jobs in total will be lost.<\/p>\n

And without specific\u00c2\u00a0government measures to shore up the industry,\u00c2\u00a0Unite warns that these losses will be a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098drop in the ocean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

Aerospace is suffering from a domino effect; with aviation being heavily hit by the pandemic, orders in aerospace have also sharply declined.<\/p>\n

To prevent further job losses and protect the supply chain Unite is urging\u00c2\u00a0the government to put in place sector support \u00e2\u20ac\u201c similar to that provided by France and Germany to their industries\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u201c until demand returns, including extending the job retention scheme (JRS) beyond October for specific sectors.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the government should introduce a form of short-time working that already exists in France with\u00c2\u00a0chomage partiel<\/em> and in Germany with Kurzarbeit<\/em>. With both the chomage partiel<\/em> and Kurzarbeit<\/em> schemes the respective governments pay up to 70 per cent of an employee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wages and the worker can continue to work on a reduced hours basis.<\/p>\n

Unite is also calling for\u00c2\u00a0a specific\u00c2\u00a0Aerospace Investment Fund\u00c2\u00a0similar to\u00c2\u00a0that introduced by the French government\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c2\u00a0support the UK aerospace\u00c2\u00a0supply-chain through the current crisis. This would include the potential to\u00c2\u00a0take major equity stakes in companies \u00e2\u20ac\u201c like the recent\u00c2\u00a0OneWeb<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0satellite\u00c2\u00a0acquisition.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAerospace has been haemorrhaging jobs in recent weeks in communities up and down the country,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite national officer for aerospace Rhys McCarthy.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNow thousands of workers throughout\u00c2\u00a0the aerospace supply chain face are also being sent to the dole queue \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and more will follow unless the government steps up.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis will hit our communities very hard and will stop the hoped-for recoveries in our regional economies dead in their tracks.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

McCarthy continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is an industry on a precipice. We urge the chancellor to use tomorrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s statement to demonstrate that this government will not let this world-leading industry to fall into decline.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnless the government acts now, as our competitor governments are doing in France and Germany, the jobs lost in recent days will\u00c2\u00a0be a drop in the ocean so we are appealing to MPs now, please lobby the Chancellor to include aerospace in his statement tomorrow.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s aerospace industry is a world leader in its field but it has been severely affected by a downturn in work due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSupport must begin with extending the JRS to aerospace or introducing supported short-time working to preserve the jobs of the highly skilled workers who are the bedrock of the industry.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
